"You'll need a couple of resources to help you brainstorm for what might do for this project. I suggest taking three sources. You can find any sources on the computer, the library or even a magazine but remember, it needs to be at least three sources."
The words of her teacher's explanation kept repeating in the quiet girl's mind. She didn't bother to write it down in a planner or have it as a reminder on her phone. The quiet student just kept it all in her mind and let it repeat in her head so she wouldn't forget. She just kept thinking and repeating it in her mind,
("At least three sources, at least three sources.")
That's all she thought throughout the time as she traveled to the library. The library was a perfect spot to find sources, let alone three. She finally stopped thinking and just said it out to herself, "Just find at least three sources. That's all, no worries." She look through isle after isle to find the right subject for what she needed for this upcoming project and gazed from shelf to shelf.
As a couple minutes went by but what felt like forever, the short-haired girl only had one source. She started to stress a bit, "I can't believe I can't find any sources for this. It all seemed easy in my head." She whispered. Who would've thought it was actually tough to find sources for a project? It was no wonder why the teacher had said at least three.
("Maybe finding sources on the computer would be best.") She thought but she'd rather have books than articles, at least she will have the sources right with her instead of having to find sites over and over again. Right now however, she felt stressed and worried.
"Let's see...let's see...what do I wish to make for this class? There are macarons, croquettes, perhaps something with fried rice? hmmm..."
Yunneth walked around the shelves where the cooking related books were. There were many different cook books which was strange for a school library but she was not about to complain. There were books were American style cooking, there was also European dishes, Japanese dishes, Mediterranean and middle eastern dishes, and even a book on Indian style dishes. And many more! Had Yunneth knew that the library had this many cook books then she would have been here the moment she stepped inside the school building. The raven loved making new dishes so seeing these made her want to cook even more. After picking up the Indian style cook book, she finally realized what her first source would be.
"Perhaps some curry croquets? I might be able to do that..."
She said to herself before picking up the book. Now for the last two. She wanted something that could perhaps go well with the spiciness of the curry. Perhaps something sweet? After looking around, Yunneth looks up onto a high shelf to see a book on French deserts. Perfect! Soon the short girl began to jump up and down in hopes of grabbing the book. Her height made it difficult and she had no idea where the librarian was so she had no help at the moment. After jumping up and down multiple times, Yunneth was now on her knees, panting. She had tired herself out.
"Why am I so short?"
She questioned herself. She looked almost pitiful. What she would give to be tall…
The quiet girl made a silent sigh until she heard a female voice from the other side of the bookshelf, struggling. "Why am I so short?" she heard the girl say. Out of curiosity, she walked to the other side to spot a short female student on the floor. The mute girl looked up to see many cookbooks on this side of the shelf and just pouted to herself.
("You just so happened to overlook things now, didn't you? You could've saved some time if you just slowly examined everything.") She thought to herself, she was usually observant of everything and this time she didn't do much observing than she realized.
Thanks to this female student, the short haired girl found the sources she needed: cookbooks. Seeing how many books there are, she couldn't exactly decide what three types of dishes she could make. Maybe some pasta, or baking a nice cake? As long as the dish wasn't something bitter she would make it. Maybe something exotic, that would be a nice challenge but then again, she didn't exactly like the idea of being unique or a show off.
("I don't want to make something that seems like I have an ego of being the best. This is just a project and I'm sure everyone will make some delicious food.") She looked on the shelf, seeing a book of desserts. Might as well go for cake, most people like cake anyway and it's quite easy to make. She reached for the book, barely grabbing it with her fingers. Now with the book in her hands, this might be easy after all. She still looked at the other student, though and then looked at the shelf of cookbooks. Whatever book she wanted must be up there, right? She decided to crouch down beside her to ask,
"U-uh...excuse me but..." It was a surprise; she actually spoke to someone. She never really speaks to anyone in this school and somehow she managed to bring herself to speak with this girl, "Is there a book that you're trying to reach for? I can get it for you if you want."
Yunneth continued to rest on the floor for the moment. She was still out of breath from jumping so much. Anymore and she will be too exhausted to even do the project she was assigned. She kept questioning why she was this height. 5'2" was not the shortest of the short but it was still annoying. She drank her milk and walked often. How was she not at least 5'5"? If she could be at least get to that height, she would be happy. Before she could get to her feet, Yunneth turned her head to see a girl with short, black hair grab one of the cook cooks.
"Ack! Please don't grab the French desserts! Please don't grab the French desserts! PLEASE!"
She continually repeated in her head. If the girl grabbed the book she had her eye on, it was just make her feel worse. It wouldn't be so much not getting her book, as it is her height. She would just grab another book with desserts. But knowing you were defeated because of your currently stunted growth would make anyone feel a little bummed. When the offered to retrieve the book, the raven haired girl smiled brightly and quickly stood up.
"PLEASE! Please do!"
Soon, Yunneth pointed up, showing a hard cover book with what looked like French sweets and pastries on the front.
"I am wanting the book on French desserts. If you could get it for me, I would be very happy."
It was true; she was short, about 5'2 no doubt but the black haired girl found it quite cute and she didn't mind it since it wasn't much of a height difference between her and this girl, just five inches apart though she was cheating another inch or two more with her ankle high boots thus making it six to seven inches apart instead. She looked up to where the girl pointed at; the cookbook of french desserts. Approaching the shelf, she reached for the book and stood on her toes for support, grabbing the book for the student. Having it in her hands, she looked at the girl, lending the book to her,
"All yours." she said quietly with a kind smile and continued to look for one more book. She only had two books; one for some pasta, and a cake but now what else? ("Maybe a small dish but it's plentiful. Like an appetizer.") She thought, another simple and quick dish but what? She looked at the girl she helped out,
"So you're doing a cooking project too, right?" Well of course she is, why else would she need to have a cookbook unless she's doing ideas for dessert at home to impress someone. "Sorry...it this is troublesome but..." her voice was a little raspy, "Do you think, um, you can help me find one more book? I need that subjects for small recipes, something that sounds like a snack but it's a very plentiful meal."
The girl watched as the taller girl was able to barely reach up and grab the book Yunneth had been wanting. Once it was given to her, The raven gave the girl a great big smile as she took the book in her hands.
"Thank you! This is just what I needed!"
Yunneth smiled happily as she began to look through the recipe book. There were plenty of French desserts to choose from. Though she was having trouble picking between a fruity croissant and macarons. She had more experience with macarons so perhaps she could make those? Perhaps.
"Ok...so curry croquettes with macarons. Perhaps I could add chocolate to the curry for a sweeter meal?"
Yunneth mumbled quietly to herself while the girl in front of her was looking through the books. When asked about the cooking project, Yunneth nodded her head, keeping a smile on her face.
"Y-yes. You are doing the same, yes?"
When asked for one more book, the raven silently began to think about it. She too needed one more book.
"It is no trouble. I might be able to think of a few ideas. I can think of veggie sticks, some sort of croquette. Onion petals as well as takoyaki. I can think of a few types of appetizers but here, let me help you find that book."
Yunneth gave a small smile before approaching the book shelf, looking through the large selection.
"What do you have in mind, if you do not mind me asking?"
"Affirmative." The girl confirmed that she was doing the same project. Smiling, the student's offer to help gave the girl relief, especially since it's been so long since she had actually conversed with somebody. Ever since she had entered this school, she didn't communicate with anyone and she, herself didn't know why. For some reason, she lacked the communication skills; to socialize with people.
She listened to everything the student listed for the next dish."I...er...mainly just wanted to make a small dish but um...it's enough to where it's like a meal. Basically, it is an appetizer." She answered.
She thought back to every food that the girl listed and they all seem like good ideas. "You know, takoyaki doesn't like a bad idea to make." With all honesty, the shy girl never actually made takoyaki before but it was worth a shot, she was willing to take on the challenge. It should be simple after all, right?
Watching the student, the shy girl kept a smile on her face, since she was in need for one more book and hopefully it's one with the recipe for takoyaki, maybe this girl still needed to find one more book as well, "Since, you're also doing the same project, maybe we can um...help each other out for the last books we need, if you're looking for another book." She said.
"If I may ask, what kind of food are you searching for?"
"So takoyaki is not a bad idea? Good! I know a man who can give us some octopus. He will not mind. Though I do hope you have quick reflexes! takoyaki is not entirely simple!"
If Yunneth could have a dollar or pound for every time she has burned a takoyaki ball, she would be on the shores of Italy while on a yacht. Actually, in the past she could have done that if she wanted to though that was not the point. She was very clumsy at the time and even now her takoyaki skills were not the best. However they have improved to the point that the octopus balls were at least edible and did not taste like burnt batter. She just hoped this girl was good at making that sort of dish. It was definitely not for the slow, that is for sure. When the lady offered to join forces, Yunneth smiled, giving a small nod.
"I would not mind that in the least. Any help is appreciated! Oh! Though I do not expect you to do all of the work, of course."
She chuckled nervously before looking back at the books.
"Well...I am not sure. I do know I will be making curry croquettes with macarons. So for now I have a spicy and sweet dish at the moment. Do you have any suggestions? Perhaps add another flavor or something to balance both out?"
She asked with curiosity why still looking for any cook book that could catch her eye.
“Well then, that’s great. That gets the octopus out of the way.” She smiled. Of course knowing herself, she never cooked takoyaki and hearing that it wasn’t simple could be a challenge. Observing, she took the idea that the student was rather a hard-working type and knew exactly what she was doing just by listening to everything she has said.
“Well then, something tells me you’re the type that doesn’t mind having to take part in some work. That’s very good, it shows cooperation and the will to participate.” She made her head bow a little bit to her and looked at the books on the shelf.
After answering her question on the dishes she had in mind and was given another question, the proper girl answered, “Hmm…croquette with macarons, that is a sweet and spicy combination of dishes and it’s a very common combination because of its balance. You’re quite creative with your dishes and for that I’ll suggest you another dish in your favor to keep the sweet and spicy balance. Try maybe some fried rice by not plain fried rice obviously.” She chuckled, “To give off some flavor, you should try teriyaki sauce, if anything honey teriyaki usually does the nice kick to the flavor and chicken. It could be a good side dish for the croquette, but even without the chicken it’s still good because of the honey teriyaki, chicken is basically another addition to the side dish. So if you want to, you can try making that for your combination.”
She continued looking for any kind of book for the student, “Usually for croquettes, rice is the typical side dish because you can add any flavor to the rice and it’ll still be good.” She explained. “By the way, I don’t think we’ve gotten each other’s names throughout this discussion so allow me to introduce myself while I still can, my name is Raven Okazaki, I am a second year student and you are?”
When the girl gave her observation of Yunneth, she seemed a little surprised at first but was flattered in the end.
"W-well...I try anyway. Why live if hard work is not involved, yes?"
This was something she learned during her short time from breaking away from the wealth that her family brought. In truth, the raven haired girl seemed happier with a more modest life style. She still felt like something was missing but she hasn't been this happy in years so for now she would be grateful for that. When the girl suggested fried rice for the third dish, Yunneth began to think about that. She never really thought of fried rice but it might be just what she needed.
"I did not think of that. I will take you up on that idea! Thank you!"
Yunneth said graciously. When given a name, Yunneth bowed and smiled.
"My name is Yunneth Sinclaire. I am a second year as well. It is nice to meet you, Raven-san."
“It is a pleasure to meet you, too, Yunneth-san. I hope we can be quite acquainted with each other since we are in the same year.” She wanted to say that Yunneth was the first person that she ever had a conversation with but it seemed too much and rather odd. In addition, she didn’t want to be questioned as to why she never really talked to anyone here in Ryoutei Academy. Besides, having a conversation with Yunneth felt great to Raven.
With a chuckle, Raven replied, “I strongly agree with that statement.” She grabbed out another cook book from the shelf and began to look through it, hoping to find the recipe Yunneth may need for fried rice, though making fried rice is quite simple and probably simpler than making takoyaki.
“Hard working is one of the important ways to survive in life. Those who don’t do much work, end up having…I don’t want to say a miserable or a bad life but it’s rather not an easy life unlike those who do work hard to live a good life.” She explained as she skimmed through the book. She didn’t want to exactly admit that she wasn’t fond of people who are lazy but this was also because throughout her life, working was rewarding and if you didn’t work, you were punished and were often looked down upon but she didn’t see that with this girl.
“A-ha! Here we are.” She had found the fried rice recipe for Yunneth and handed it out to her, “I’m sure you already know how to make fried rice but this is so you can show your teacher what you have made and how to make it.”
"Well...I suppose it depends on the person. If you are not of a wealthy background it will be rather difficult. Though I was talking more about those who have everything but do not work hard at anything. Think about it. If you have everything you wanted, what would be the point in living? You have it all, what next?"
Yunneth knew this all too well. Before the murder, the raven was a brat. She always wanted more stuff but when it was given, she merely wanted more. She was never truly happy until recently. She actually had to think about why she was unhappy until she gained her answer. Of course she was sure both her and Raven were correct, she could not help but look at their discussion from a different view. After a moment, Yunneth chuckled and managed to smile.
"Sorry about that. Certain subjects get me a little too...talkative.
When the book was given to her, Yunneth's smile widened as she placed the book in her arms, along with the other two she had in her possession. Now she had everything she needed. Perhaps she would make this dish when she had company? Of course it will be made for class but depending on how it turns out, she would love to have a friend over and recreate the dish.
"Thank you very much, Raven-san! This will help me greatly!"
Raven stared at the raven girl with wide-eyes, astounded by her opinion and rather much applauded to it but felt some guilt that she even blushed a bit, “I’m sorry, if I offended you on what I said, I didn’t mean to," she cleared her throat and added, "But I do appreciate your opinion because that is all true. Some wealthy people aren’t so grateful with what they are given.” She bowed slightly and heard Yunneth chuckle and apologize,
She made a tiny chuckle in the back of her throat, “Oh don’t worry about it, I’m glad you expressed it. Many people get too shy or are scared to say what they truly think and besides, I’m very much open to hear what others say, it helps me understand them more.” She placed a hand on Yunneth’s shoulder for a bit and then removed it. Whoever this girl is, Raven wanted to get to know her a lot more. Not only for more than likely being a hard-working type but rather intelligent.
After having the book taken and was thanked for, Raven once again bowed to Yunneth, “Oh no need to thank me, I’m very glad that I could help you out and I wish you the best of luck on making these dishes. If anything it only makes me curious and tempted to try out your cooking someday.” After that, she continued on to look for a cookbook that had the takoyaki recipe. Skimming through book after book she found one that had the recipe she needed, “Okay, thank goodness I found the recipe.” She laughed a little bit.
"Offend me? Don't be absurd! You have offended no one. Heheh, don't worry about it, alright?"
She was glad that Raven agreed with her. She was not sure if Raven could fully understand what it would be like since Yunneth has lived that life herself. But she seemed to get it so she was happy that the two shared the same mindset on the subject. As she explained how good it was for someone to be open in order to understand them, the raven haired girl smiled brightly.
"I can agree with that. One of the best ways to know someone is by their words and beliefs. Of course actions could speak louder though i personally think both go hand in hand; but i digress."
Hearing such words made Yunneth smile. She would be honored for someone to try her cooking. She had great aspirations in cooking and only hoped to fulfill them. She just hoped that she could impress this girl at least. She did not want such enthusiasm to be wasted.
"I wish you the best of luck as well! Perhaps we can find a day to visit and cok for each other? Perhaps your place or mine? Either way I would greatly enjoy your company. Perhaps I can even make some snacks or tea to go along with the meals."
She mentioned as she watched the girl get her book.
Raven pulled back a few strands of her hair behind her ear, “That’s true, most times actions do speak louder than words. I guess you can say that words and actions make quite a balance for each other, don’t you think?” she grabbed her three cookbooks and held on to them, tightly. She had a good combination of dishes; takoyaki as the appetizer, pasta for the main meal and cake for the dessert. She didn’t find anything wrong with that idea.
As soon as she heard Yunneth offering a time for each other to try their cooking, it made Raven feel that exhilarating thrill, “Really? You want to spend a day with me for food?” It was very quick since they had only just met but the fact that Raven was so curious about Yunneth’s cooking and herself in general, she didn’t seem to mind this idea at all.
“Well then, I’d be delighted to.” She blushed a little bit though she didn’t want to spend it at her place, she’d rather have it at Yunneth’s. The thought of having anyone at Raven’s household gave her a sickly feeling to the stomach, she forbid that anyone goes to her place. It just felt too…haunting, “I think having it at your place would be better, you after all practically invited me.” She laughed, “Whichever day that you feel is best, I will be there. It’s an honor knowing that you wouldn’t mind having me around for some meals.” She smiled but then realized the time it must have taken already. “Well then, I think I should get going now, thank you so much for this. It was a pleasure to meet you.”
