"I find it rather adorable that you're a little excited about me having to make this meal for you." Then again, she already began viewing Yunneth as adorable. To her, she’s like a puppy wanting food, or a playful child, getting news from their parents that they're going to get a new toy. It's the exhilaration they tend to get, so full of energy, and that's how she’s seeing Yunneth at the moment.
After finding out that Yunneth has already known how to make calamari, Raven made a somewhat dumbfounded face,
"Oh!"
But then she also hears that Yunneth wants to try someone else's cooking of the dish,
"Oh, well I don't mind that. But one day, you have got to let me try your version of calamari then. That's only fair." She winked at her. Yunneth can't only have the idea to herself. They're both cooks after all.
"Is there anything else you need before you start?"
Now that Yunneth has asked that question, there’s something Raven needs before she could start cooking; cooking utensils, pans, and all that kitchenware. How can she make calamari if she doesn't have those?
"Well since this isn't my house, where are your kitchenware stuff like knives?" She asked, looking around the kitchen. Had this been her kitchen, she would know exactly where she had put all of her stuff to cook.
When called adorable, the raven began to wring her hands and twiddle her thumbs while a light blush could be seen on her face. It was not often that she would be called adorable. And when she is, she became bashful and wanted to hide her face. Of course she did love compliments. She was not one to fish for them of course but when she is complimented, she just becomes bubbly. It makes her happy to receive such a flattering compliment. When told to let Raven try her version of the dish at some point, sighed in happiness and nodded her head; her eyes keeping that same childish and happy brightness.
"O-of course! When I get more squid, I can make some for you. Perhaps prepare a bento for you so you can try more than my calamari. I don't mind of course."
She kept a smile on her face until questioned about kitchen ware.
"How silly of me! I forgot to get everything out. Give me a moment if you would."
And with that, Yunneth began to open the cabinets. She took out cooking tongs, a plate for the calamari to be set, a fryer, and what ever else Raven needed. Once she set out the cutting board and knife, she turned to her friend and gave a small sigh.
"There we go. That should be everything. Let me know if you are missing anything."
Calamari and bento? It already sounds like a good meal combination. Raven isn't really the all-time food master, but she’ss very open when it comes down to food combinations. Even ones that are very exotic to her taste. It’s very nice that Yunneth’s willing to make more food for her after that. She likes the whole idea of exchanges with meals. What could possibly be better than a payment by food? Once again, Yunneth's excited child attitude has the black-haired female, smiling. Beginning to feel a nice connection going on between the two, almost sisterly? Though they've known each other for a short time, it felt almost like home, despite Raven never having a sister before. She indeed had a younger sibling but...it was something she never wants to bring up ever.
"How silly of me! I forgot to get everything out. Give me a moment if you would."
"Take your time, there's no rush." Raven chuckledand watching as the small girl grabs out all that she needs to cook the calamari. Perfect, she can make the dish in no time now; the ingredients and tools are all set out for her, and she has all the time she needs in the world. She prefers cooking something that isn't needed in due time, or else she would feel pressured, along with pushed over; something she’ss very uneasy with. She likes taking her time so that she can get just the right kick of flavors in her meals, and they would turn out delicious, in result.
"Alright I shall start with the calamari rings first, since that's usually the easy part. All I have to do is cut them into rings." She gave out a smile to Yunneth.
"If you want to, you can still watch me as I cook it. Or have a nice surprise."
"Oh you wouldn't really mind? In that case i will watch from a distance and bring you anything you may need. Please do not hesitate if you need anything."
The raven smiled before taking a seat at the small circular dinner table. The table seemed to be for one person as the empty chair did not match the small dinner table. Everything in the apartment seemed to be fit for a single person. She did not seem to carry to carry a lot of food despite doing plenty of cooking. It seemed almost quiet and lonely if it was just Yunneth. After a few moments of silence, the girl decided to try and start another conversation.
"So...um...I feel we should try to get to know each other a little more if you do not mind talking as you cook. Like...do you live alone? If so, what do you do for a living?"
Perhaps not the best questions to start with but they were the first to come to mind. She was curious if she lived with family or if Raven lived alone like her. Of course if that is the case, she is sure the circumstances are much different.
"Oh...um you don't have to answer if you do not want to. I can ask something else unless you have any questions."
Giving a nod to Yunneth, Raven didn't mind at all that she watches. Maybe she'll learn a thing or two from her ways of cooking. She’s open about learning from Yunneth as well for cooking, so she put it under the assumption that maybe this could be a sort of arrangement for the two cooks.
"I will let you know on asking for help." She gave her a thumbs, winked at her and began making the calamari by first, cutting it into calamari rings. One thing that she doesn't like when cooking seafood is the scent of it. As she’s cutting up the squid, the fishy odor started to float around her. Raven tends to ignore the nasty scent, since she’s so used to it. Still, she has a repulsive feeling towards it.
The place grew quiet as Raven began cooking, Yunneth decided to break the silence by the suggestion of getting to know each other more. Listening and staying open-minded with this idea, Raven figures it would help give them an understanding of themselves, aside from them being their own personal chefs. The small girl asked if she resides alone for a starter,
"Why yes, I do live alone. All by myself." Raven simply answered, having the tendency to ignore the reason why she lives alone. Then there was the added question of what she likes to do as a usual hobby,
"Hmmm for a living..." Raven gave a bit of thought before she answers. Aside from cooking, she mostly does chores, but there isn't really much to do at her place,
"I guess be out of my home a lot. I don't really like spending all my time at home unless it's school work. If anything, I'm more of the person who's away from home a lot." She gave an honest answer that she can come up with,
"You'll more than likely see me at the bakery or maybe the public pool since I like sweets and swimming. I don't really swim a lot as I used to, but that doesn't mean I've lost my swimming legs." She laughed a little.
"What about you? I'm sure you got things to your likings or at least a hobby."
So Raven lives alone like her. She wondered if Raven shared her feelings about living alone. As much as Yunneth does not mind it too much, it still felt lonely. As if she was the only one who existed. Everything was so quiet. It always felt that way. Of course it was worse in the estate. Imagine a large mansion that was always quiet. The help never spoke in the presence of the family that lived there. Everyone being so serious and melancholy. It almost made her feel like she was going mad! Perhaps she would have? Yunneth never wanted to find out so she was glad she left when she could. She wanted to ask why Raven lived alone. Did she have problems with her family too? Were they trying to force her into an arranged marriage as well? Then again it was most likely other reasons of course. It just made the raven all the more curious but she knew her boundaries and aimed to not cross any set lines if she could help it. When Raven spoke about her "living" as in hobbies, Yunneth raised an eye brown.
"Not exactly what i meant by "a living" but interesting either way. I guess that is two things we have in common."
She giggled. She wanted to know if she had a job if she was living alone but perhaps hobbies and interests are a better topic. She loved sweets and she loved to swim in the ocean when able to go. When asked of her interests, Yunneth thought about it a moment.
"I like to make new recipes, I like flower crowns and I hope to have a small flower garden soon...maybe ass some strawberries to the mix. For baking reasons of course. I also paint, draw, and other forms of art, including photography. What else..."
She thought for a moment before smiling.
"Aaaand I like to get into haunted houses and see what I can find! Even if it is a ghost or poltergeist~"
The way she said it sounded so cheerful and it sounded as if that was one of the most normal pass times in the world. One would think she was joking but if one looks at her face, studying her expression, mainly her eyes, it can be said she was dead serious.
"The decrepit and musty look is always nice as the history of the house can be seen. Heehee! It's actually wonderful."
She giggled, a weirder side of herself beginning to show.
For her personal reasons, Raven’ss unable to explain why she lives alone. What could she even say to Yunneth? That she has no family? That all she does in her daily life is just be alone, get out of the house and come back to her hated home? Or do school work and forget about the social life because she isn't sure how to start one?
How can she explain that she lives most of her life just being lonesome? She couldn't bring up any of that because she believes that it would only bring in some concerning questions from Yunneth, and Raven prefers that she doesn't worry about her. She manages to live her life alone pretty well, or so she thinks. The benefit at least is that she and Yunneth have something in common,
"Do you happen to live by yourself or live with a roommate, a sibling or any family member of some sort?"
Finished on cutting the squid into calamari rings, Raven began working on the eggs. She grabbed a bowl and began cracking the eggs open with one hand. Then, she grabbed the whisk tool and began beating the egg yolks in the bowl, until it was slightly beaten. After that, it was the garlic cloves next, and when Raven was about to begin on mashing the garlic, she listened on to Yunneth's explanation of her hobbies,
"You're rather the creative kind of person, aren't you?" She raised a brow at her while mashing the cloves,
"I love art, I actually take an art class in Ryoutei. I'm more of the looker than a person who makes art however but it's still pretty fun." Finished mashing, she places the garlic cloves along with the beaten eggs, and grabs a little spoon, mixing the eggs and garlic in well, together.
The cook was about to pour out some corn meal into a bowl to begin coating the rings, until she pauses for a moment when she hears the young girl about having a liking to explore the paranormal, especially since she sounds so enthusiastic and has such a thrill about it,
"You mean you like...searching through haunted houses, like really abandoned houses or do you mean doing research about haunted houses?” Raven became unsure how to feel about that. It's not that she’s afraid of ghosts or anything of the paranormal, it’s the idea that people are fascinated on exploring for the activity.
"You know, it's said that if you provoke ghosts or any demonic entity that you'll end up getting hurt yourself, and it may possibly follow you." She explained. She believes that something like that shouldn't be evoked, since it could end up being deadly.
When asked if she lived with anyone, her genuine smile turned to a forced one. Though eventually a frown formed. She was not upset with the question. Not at all! If anything she expected the question sooner or later since it has just been them the entire time they were together.
"No actually. It is just me. Me and my family have a lot of..."issues" to work out. My family is not quite happy with me. Actually they are quite cross with my "selfish" decisions. So I am living here on my own until an outcome is decided."
She really was not sure what kind of outcome she expected but a few came to mind. She would either run out of money and be forced to move back home, being forced into a life she does not want, some how succeed in her new "working girl" life style, come to some sort of compromise with her distant father, or some other outcome she has yet to predict. She just wanted to be left be, make friends, fall in love and have a family that is actually happy. That was what she wanted in life anyway though it seems others had different plans for her future that she did not agree with. Though when the conversation turned to art, a smile returned to her face. She liked to think she was creative. Perhaps she could share her art book to Raven this evening? She had many drawings and paintings she wished to share. When the subject about her potentially dangerous hobby was asked about, Yunneth gave a big cheery grin and smiled.
"I do a bit of both but mostly delve in and take the riches of with in! Even if it is a toy truck its nice to find!"
She giggled until ghosts, demons, and poltergeists came up.
"Weeeeell..."
She twiddled her thumbs and chuckled.
"One actually did follow me recently. I got rid of it of course. A difficult bugger but all I did was leave him offerings and he left me be. Ugh...Ruined my favorite blouse, he did but it's fine. I will get a new one sooner or later."
By the tone of her voice, she was not taking this seriously. Not at all. She did try and show respect to ghosts and leave offerings if possible but she tried not to go to any priests. Both Catholic, Buddhist, or otherwise. It was nothing against religion but she has a philosophy, an out look on life. And it caused her not to really believe in gods. That and she was sure you had to believe in the god of that faith for a blessing to even work or something along those lines so there was that.
"I have done this for years so do not worry!"
...Was that really going to put Raven's mind at ease?
Raven frowned a bit, maybe the family question was a little too straightforward, or possibly uneasy for Yunneth to answer?
"I'm sorry," Gritting her teeth out of nervous tension, "Maybe bringing up that was a little too much to ask. I hope I didn't make you uncomfortable."
Though Yunneth sounded fine on answering her question, Raven did feel that it should've been best to not bring up such things. Perhaps if they've gotten to know each other better, maybe subjects like that would be less unnerving.
"I'll admit, I do understand the whole acts of the supposedly 'selfish'. My parents were almost like that with me as well." She at least tried to comfort her, but maybe bringing up something that involved her parents’ relationship with her isn't at all a good idea.
She immediately made a way to recover,
"But that's a different story, I don't really like talking about that all too much." Forcing out a nervous laugh as she continues to cook.
Just listening to Yunneth doing paranormal research and for riches, literally makes Raven uneasy. She tried not to think too hard on it as she places the cornmeal in another bowl to begin the coating for the calamari. Grabbing a slight handful of cornmeal, Raven begins to sprinkle it onto the bare calamari rings, coating them. While at it, she heard about the toy truck and then...the paranormal incident.
She only knew Yunneth for less than a week, but hearing something like that sounded really dangerous, even for someone like Raven to get involved with that sort of activity; it's just too risky.
"You know, doing something like that is not really good. It doesn't really matter if you managed to get rid of the entity, there are spirits out there that can be very aggressive." She lectured the young girl,
"They can even do more than just ruin your clothing, they can hurt you...they can even possess you if you're so feeble minded."
She doesn't know why, but she felt like telling Yunneth something like this should discourage her from doing anything involving with paranormal activity; but it's not really any of Raven's business of what Yunneth likes and dislikes on what she's doing.
For now, she realized that she shouldn't act so motherly towards her,
"Just try to be careful and all when you provoke things of the paranormal. You don't want to end up in an abandoned house, seeing something that you shouldn't see and then nearly get killed for it. There are mysterious places out there where people come in and...never come out."
Yunneth flashed her a smile, trying to reassure her.
"Listen, me and my family are not on good terms. That is simply a fact and for now I can not change it. I do not like it but...I will not ignore it. To ignore it makes me an idiot."
She stated simply. Yes...to speak of the issue hurt but she was not going to hide it. When Raven mentioned her parents acting similar to "selfish" acts, Yunneth could not help but chuckle.
"Then I suppose you understand, yes? Such relationships are annoying and I wish we could find middle ground. Ah but...that is a conversation for another day I suppose."
As Raven already said, she does not want to talk about it. Truthfully, neither did she. Raven came here to hang out and cook with her. Not talk about emotional things. Plus Yunneth wanted to try and keep this as fun as possible. When talking about the ghost following her as well as attacking, Yunneth knew Raven was right. It really isn't good but...she enjoyed the thrill when exploring such places.
"Would it put your mind at ease if I told you I am experienced in this sort of thing?"
She knew the dangers. How one can be possessed or never return. But she was confident enough not to be added to either of those body counts. She'll be fine.
The good part about this conversation is that both Raven and Yunneth found an understanding of each other for having somewhat similar experiences in their backgrounds. The stories may be different, but the elements are nearly the same. Albeit, this sort of topic is too personal and emotional, and thankfully, Yunneth is willing to just drop the topic in a simple manner for both of their sakes.
“Ah yes, indeed.” She agreed on both accounts, “Perhaps some time in the future, there’s much to explain.”
(“Now, now, you don’t know her fully. It’s best to just keep calm and brush it off. These are her own personal hobbies and you can’t do much to stop her on what she does.”) Raven thought to herself. She kept on distracting herself by coating the calamari rings with the cornmeal and shook off any excess so she can dip the coated rings in the mixture of the eggs and garlic.
“I guess so for one who has been experienced for...how long if I may ask?” Perhaps it’s something that can ease Raven, but is still seems worrisome.

She was glad that Raven and her seemed to come to an understanding for the moment. This was not a conversation for two people who still barely know one another. Plus there was a lot of complicated things involved she was just not in the mood to talk about. But now they could focus on what is really important: having a good time with good food. When asked for how long she has done paranormal investigation, Yunneth hummed a little, watching as her little black cat walked into the kitchen and jumped into her lap, letting out a small mewl.
"I think I was nine or ten. My brother did this sort of thing when he was around. He and his twin did not see eye to eye and we did not know a lot of people our age. Not to mention our parents were, and still are, very busy people. So he would take me on "adventures" to end some of the monotony. I have taken up his torch since then."
She felt a little sad talking about it but...at the same time she loved her hobby. Yunneth didn't want to give it up, not for the world or almost anyone. It brought her a sense of peace, something she missed from time to time.
While Yunneth was explaining, Raven became slightly startled to see the black cat appearing.
“Oh! I suppose this is your pet here? I didn’t even see him when I arrived.” She pointed out. Oh, the days when she used to have a pet cat. It was all back when she was but a small child; careless about the world outside, and the future that awaited her. Of course, she misses the idea of having a pet but now, it’d be difficult to commit on keeping one for personal reasons.
Raven couldn’t judge Yunneth’s brother for the influence of the whole paranormal investigating as a hobby. Besides, it seems there was quite a precious bond between the two and Raven didn’t plan to tarnish that, nor Yunneth’s memory and reason. She let it slide, in conclusion.
Now that the calamari was dipped in the egg and garlic mix, Raven had forgotten about the bread crumbs and salt to coat the rings a second time. Thank goodness Yunneth brought out all the ingredients for the calamari. Since she had to put the dipped rings in waiting, Raven grabbed another measuring cup and opened the bag of bread crumbs. She scooped up a cup full of the crumbs and set it on the counter, taking a little bit of it in her hand and coated the calamari rings that were dipped in the mix. After that was settled, the next ingredient is the salt. To give it a nice flavor, she sprinkled the salt on the rings and began shaking off any excess on the rings, one more time.
“Okay since that is done, apparently because the rings are coated and haven’t fully stick together. They need to be refrigerated within the hour or so. I hope you won’t mind the waiting.” She clasped her food covered hands together.
"Yes! This is Kuro. He is my cute little side kick. Right boy?"
She looked down at the small cat. He just stared up at her before settling himself in her lap. She chuckled before muttering "Lazy little kitty" under her breath. Soon she heard that the calamari would have to set in the fridge for at least an hour.
"That is no problem! In the mean time I can make a meal for you! I was thinking about making something for you involving beef. But I should ask if there is anything you want. I will see if I can make it."
Yunneth smiled happily, looking quite confident in her cooking skill. She just hoped Raven would at least pick something she could make. What ever she makes, Yunneth just hopes she could impress Raven. It was the least she could do!
"Also after we eat our meals, I planned on making a cake for dessert. Is chocolate strawberry okay with you?"
A pleasant smile formed on Raven’s face, finding it adorable of how affectionate Yunneth is with her cat,
“He seems really precious.”
Okay good, she doesn't mind the wait. The calamari can be refrigerated for an hour or so, and by then, Yunneth's cooking should be done. Pushing a strand of hair behind her ear, Raven thought about it for a moment. Something that involves beef. She’s not going to turn down the meal, that’s for sure. What could be a good combination that can go with beef? Perhaps a pasta combo? Ah screw it,
“You know what? Surprise me, I don’t mind anything. It’s after all food and if it’s something new I’d really like to take a try.” She gave out a shrug and grinned, though not a wide grin since she decided to keep her teeth concealed.
Oh yes, dessert. The best part of after a nice big meal. Since Yunneth seems to really want to do anything and everything to impress Raven, or at least have a satisfying dish, she couldn’t help but laugh.
“Chocolate strawberry is very much fine with me. It’s cake, you can’t go wrong with that.”
