Jen perked up at this, not because she was particularly inclined to major in English, but rather...
"So can you speak English? Because if so, it would honestly make my life a lot easier," another significant sip, maybe she should cut herself off after this, "if you're more comfortable with Japanese though, we can continue."
The dhampir hesitated at the further questioning about her father's occupation. She bit her lip and diverted her eyes, the atmosphere was entirely too intimate for her to broadcast too much detail; Hell, if she went overboard, that could be dangerous. Jen fidgeted with a lock of hair, twirling it about her index finger once, twice, then her face betrayed her nervousness, "He's a researcher. Mostly studies things like the paranormal."
Could she get away with leaving it at that? It wasn't a lie, but she certainly didn't divulge everything.
God, please don't inquire further into that...
It was stressful enough that Jen finished the rest of her drink, much like Ruki had done to his earlier (though hers was probably far more palatable).
"I guess my original reason for asking was a bit shallow, but I don't usually see many full blood Japanese people with gray eyes. Though now," she flashed her gaze again, and leaned against her backrest, her body language opening up more (though her legs remained crossed), "it feels more compelling since you've said you're interested in pursuing English as a major, in a non-English-speaking country."
[attr="class","textieno"]This would be very intriguing to start speaking in the English language, as Ruki has been mostly speaking in Japanese. That however, doesn’t affect him to have any difficulties to speak. Since she’s also an English speaker as well and probably fluent at it, he might as well try shifting languages for now. It’s not like most of these people in the lounge will understand what they’re saying.[break][break]
He would test her with the Japanese language, but it’s possible she might be just as proficient as he is with English. Ruki cleared his throat, shifting the languages and responded to her question,[break][break]
“Indeed I do.” a foreign accent was settled in once he spoke the language.[break][break]
He saw that look on Jen’s face, that nervous tension. The bite on her lip and the twirling of a single lock of hair. She gave out her answer, saying that her father does research, and mostly on the paranormal. Quite a peculiar subject to study about at the university. Unless…[break][break]
Is it possible? Considering the supernatural activities that happen here, yet most creatures tend to be discreet about it; it would make much sense that her father might have known something about Kamina. Perhaps hearing about rumors of high activities on the occult? She seems extremely nervous speaking about it in the manner, and she even finished her drink. This could be the perfect opportunity: she might be vulnerable and he may have a chance to figure her out.[break][break]
“Why the sudden jitter? Are you perhaps embarrassed about this matter, or were you attempting to make your way around the subject?” A faint smirk began to form on the vampire’s face.[break][break]
Once again, he observes her body language, her legs still crossed but as for the upper body, it’s more relaxed.[break][break]
“I don’t see why not choose English as the major. To be frank, it’s mostly aimed for myself rather than it is for others. I don’t plan to use the major to pursue something that involves being gregarious amongst people.”
A genuine smile briefly flashed on Jen's face when she heard Ruki switch to English, accented or not. It was somehow oddly refreshing to hear her native tongue spoken back at her. Hell, that accent - faint though it was - was, she dared say, charming; she was glad the lighting was low, because she definitely felt a slight heat rush to her cheeks.
Not that it was anything specific to him, mind you; she just liked such things. Always had, probably always will.
God damn it, he had to ask...
Jen wrapped a hand around her water, and she had to think hard about how best to respond. She couldn't hold eye contact while she pondered, and if it didn't already feel like he was attempting to dissect her with his gaze before, it certainly did now. However, she came to her decision, and fixed that same serious look on Ruki that she had in the bar; no playfulness nor tease could be detected in her voice, which was considerably softer than usual as she spoke with her Brooklyn-accented English:
"There's a lot of things I'm willing to discuss, but that, I couldn't even if I wanted to."
Jen hadn't forgotten how cold Ruki's hands were that day. It was also reasonably warm in here, yet the air around him felt just as icy as before. She glanced at his fingers, clutching the highball glass, maybe for an instant too long before she looked away. Considering his reaction to her pinning them the other day, she thought it might be inappropriate to ask to touch them again, to confirm the possibility that he was like her mother.
A vampire.
It would certainly explain why I thought he was at least in college; maybe he actually is even older than he seems...
She drank some more of her water, feeling a bit more lightheaded from the alcohol. She wasn't anywhere near drunk, and could generally hold her liquor pretty well, but she did feel a mite tipsy. The dhampir listened to him, but her next question ostensibly passed right by it all. That accent, it had to be some kind of Northern or Western European. Jen attempted to mask her vulnerability with her feline smirk, "I'm digging that accent of yours. Dutch? Swedish? Icelandic? Something like that?"
[attr="class","textieno"]There’s the obvious nervous reaction, something’s on her mind and it only made Ruki want to know more of what she’s hiding. Her face changed into a more sincere one, trying to be more calm and firm about it. This response should be rather interesting.[break][break]
She refused.[break][break]
Of course, it’s something that she tends to keep secret. Whatever she’s hiding, it’s something that has to do with the supernatural. Oh, if only she knew what he is. Perhaps then, it’ll confirm something her father is researching. However, Ruki knows when to be discreet, so he wouldn’t reveal himself so openly. Not unless someone is willing to provoke him. Like that second-year he had to “tutor”. Though to hint at her about it sounds enticing.[break][break]
If only she knew that he’s not human.[break][break]
Admittedly, the thought about provoking her to say something is crossing his mind. On the other hand, who’s to say that this is any of Ruki’s business? He did after all, refuse the idea of wanting to know her. Still, she’s hiding something and it’s tempting to know what it is.[break][break]
“Fair enough.” Ruki chuckled before taking another sip of his bourbon, again. It’s still more than halfway full, since this conversation has kept him engaged, somehow. “Sounds like it’s too personal for you to explain about it. But I won't go any further into this subject. I don't really care, to be honest.” He's only curious.[break][break]
"I'm digging that accent of yours. Dutch? Swedish? Icelandic? Something like that?"[break][break]
He took another sip down, and savored it for while, intentionally. He never exactly heard someone complimenting his accent before and to hear it from Jen, he isn’t sure how to feel about that. The feeling of disgust formed, at least. Just stay calm about it, pretend you didn’t hear the compliment. He thought to himself. After swallowing, he put his glass down, though he grew unsure to whether look at her or not. He decided not to.[break][break]
“Close. To answer your question, it is Danish.” At least she was spot on around the European countries. “Your accent is different from a typical English accent. It’s unfamiliar to me and yet, it happens to be your native language?”
"It's not even that it's too personal," Jen gave him a slightly more sidelong look, and a twinge of sadness crept through her voice, perhaps given a bit of leeway with her mild intoxication, "It's more that, if I say too much, it could be dangerous. Legitimately dangerous. I hope you understand, but it's okay if you don't."
Danish. She both expected it and didn't, she supposed. Truthfully she'd never distinctly listened to a Danish accent before, but at least two of the ones she listed were vaguely familiar to her.
For a moment, she held her head higher, and rested her knuckles under her chin in a gesture of elegance, a smokiness coming over her voice (especially in response to the slow guitar rhythm of Tin Pan Alley), "Was born in Brooklyn, New York. Spent just enough time there to get the accent, I suppose~"
A moment of quiet as she took in a good portion of her remaining water, and switched the cross of her legs the other way to get comfortable. However, something was still nagging at her...
"Wait wait, so..." gears began to turn in the dhampir's mind, and her brow furrowed as she leaned forward, somewhat perplexed, "how does a Dane end up in Japan, with a Japanese name? Like there has to be a story there. If you're willing to tell, I'm willing to listen. Oh, and do you want another drink, or no?"
[attr="class","textieno"]She showed more of a different side of her, the more Ruki tends to poke at the subject. From how she’s acting, it seems she’s already getting intoxicated. That’s not his problem to handle, she did that to herself.[break][break]
“Oh I understand,” The faint smirk he has grew a little wider, “It’d be very wise to keep yourself out of danger’s way.” They know. Her, her father, they obviously know something and because she might be under the assumption that Ruki’s human, she can’t really say. For now, that’s all the information he’s going to get. It won’t be much of a surprise, now that he can tell there’s something "secretly dangerous" that’s she hiding.[break][break]
“Ah, so you’re an American.” Ruki has never been to the States before. Though he and his brothers have traveled far around, they never exactly went to the other side of the world. “It’s not everyday, you get to see one here in Kamina.” Then again, that’s him being antisocial. There are probably some Americans here, it’s mostly because of his reclusive lifestyle that he just never interacts with anyone.[break][break]
He stopped himself when Jen asked that question. Looking completely stiff, as if she paralyzed him with her words. She can ask any others questions but this one...[break][break]
He could only stare at his glass of bourbon, “That is a question that I do not want to answer.” his voice dropped, growing colder than his usual tone.[break][break]
“If you’re wise and insightful, I'd suggest you drop any questions that are beyond personal. I will not have myself answer them, because they are none of your business.” She could’ve asked any question that’s still basic, and maybe he could answer them. This question however, is not a question he’s willing open up to some woman he happens to meet again, unintentionally. His grip tightens around his highball glass. It’s not that there’s anger, it’s just that Ruki believes she won’t understand, at all.[break][break]
She wasn't sure how she felt about the clear affirmative he gave in response to her insistence on secrecy. As in, he didn't seem the least bit concerned about the danger, despite his warning.
Was he...? Did he know?
Jen shifted in her seat, feeling uneasy now, her curiosity eating her up inside. She wanted nothing more than to just ask and stop that nagging in the back of her brain... but she refrained. It was probably for the better, especially after she watched the way he reacted to her inquiry about his being in Japan. The dhampir supposed that perhaps he meant to intimidate her somehow, to get her to back off; although she was wise enough to understand to tread a bit more lightly, she refused to let him scare her.
Besides that, something in the way he said that felt more pained, more sad, than angry. It had to have been something big, but maybe... maybe it was traumatic?
"Shit, I'm sorry..." Regardless, Jen still felt bad about touching on something that was - apparently - still quite raw in Ruki's mind, even if she couldn't possibly have known why or how, "I didn't realize it was a sensitive subject."
She finished off her water, not sure if the conversation could recover from that tonight. Besides, she'd already decided she'd had enough alcohol for the night, so it was probably time she headed home. Jen flagged down the bartender, then handed over the cash for the drinks, plus a generous (but not over-indulgent) tip. One gold heel on the ground, then another, and she found her balance easily. Good, that meant she wasn't embarrassingly drunk.
Before she left, she stopped, and looked Ruki in the eyes, with a slightly sad smile, "I don't know about you, but I enjoyed talking with you tonight. Take care getting home~ perhaps we'll see each other again soon."
Really, she kind of hoped to see him again. At this point, she felt like she'd gotten to know just enough about the enigmatic young(?) man, that it would feel wrong not to see what else she could glean from their conversations. He certainly wasn't your average bar fly, and now Jen wanted to figure out why that was. Just... not tonight.
She headed out the door without another word, and waited to hail a cab.
[attr="class","textieno"]He chose not to speak with her after that. Ruki didn’t even move a muscle when Jen apologized. Since he took most of his time drinking, not even finishing his second glass, the alcohol didn’t affect him all too much. There was a slight lightheaded feeling, but it’s not to where the vampire felt buzzed or anything. He remained mostly sober throughout the conversation, meaning he’s not going to forget any of this. Maybe he should’ve drank more, instead. First time meeting her, he drank too fast. Second time, he drinks too slow. At least he was more responsible with it. Maybe too responsible.[break][break]
If this conversation is to continue, it’s going to be awkward after that question popped in. Ruki felt that leaving would be the better idea, but he hasn’t even finished his bourbon. He couldn’t watch, but he could hear Jen’s movements going about as she flagged down and paid the bartender for the drinks. The sound of her heels clicking on the floor were heard and Ruki knew immediately; she’s going to leave. Fine by him, gives him time to finish his drink and make his depart whenever he’s ready. She passed by him, and without giving much thought, the vampire turned his head towards her, when she happened to stare and make eye contact with him. That smile of hers looked rather sad, as if she truly didn’t mean to ask that certain question.[break][break]
"I don't know about you, but I enjoyed talking with you tonight. Take care getting home~ perhaps we'll see each other again soon."
With that Jen made her depart, while Ruki just watched her leave the lounge. Enjoyment? Hoping to see each other soon? Again? Ruki turned his head back to his glass and his brows furrowed, puzzled. Is she that willing to see him again? If so, why? What did he manage to do that made her want to know more about him?[break][break]
No, I don’t want to see you. You’re making a big mistake and wasting your time. Give up on me and move on.[break][break]
He should’ve said that to her. Why is she doing this? This is only going to be a waste. He hates it, he hates the fact that he has ever met her. Why did he go to that bar? They should’ve never met and he should’ve never texted her.[break][break]
What is Jen’s motive? What is she trying to prove? That he’s going to see her equally? That he’ll view her as some sort of acquaintance? She’s wasting her time, he just knows that she is.[break][break]
So many thoughts in his head, so many questions unanswered. It began to make Ruki grow in frustration, that he chugged down his bourbon. Why can’t he just figure her out? She's just some salacious woman, that's all she is. She's probably someone who throws her to whoever she can, despite admiring the trait of intelligence.[break][break]
The vampire looked out to the lounge’s entrance, the direction to leave. Admittedly, this conversation was interesting especially since he hasn’t really exactly engaged a one-on-one conversation with someone for a while and…[break][break]
