tadashi hasegawa comes from a fairly rich family of athletes, his mother and father having met at swimming tournaments and his older sister being rather skilled in basketball. Hell, even his dog probably has some fucking talent in sports, judging by that. He, however, never really had that. He'd stare at his family's acquired trophies with the hope that maybe, one day, he'd be able to do just the same, but knowing how it was never really going to come true.
his first attempt at sports had been swimming. he was fairly good at it, but it was way too messy for tadashi. He had some sort of obsession with keeping his hair in form, so anything having to do with water would damage it sooner or later. basketball, badminton and baseball hadn't worked too well, either. However, one day in middle school, he'd stumbled upon this specific club: the volleyball club. not only did it have everything he'd ever wanted in a sport, he seemed to also be fairly skilled at it.
The brown haired boy soon enough found himself in the setter position, trying to figure out specific ways in order to get his team to win. he perfected his serve up to the point of it being almost always accurate in reaching its target and realized how easily he could control the momentum of the game with simple strategies. Volleyball was an easy sport, as long as he could read his enemies. Using surprising strategies and hoping for the best, his team soon enough found itself being one of the best in the prefecture. and when it came to highschool, he found one of the best ones to go to. the team was great and cooperative, besides one single guy, but that was fairly easy to get over.
what truly and utterly fucked him up, however, was his horrible habit of overworking himself. his jump serves weren't perfect, not quite yet, at least in his view, and no matter how much he trained, he was never able to reach whatever level he wanted. His friends told tadashi it was fine, he was doing perfectly well, hell, he even had a bunch of fangirls. but for him it wasn't enough. by the second semester of his first year, he had to trade one of his knee pads for a knee supporter.
it all culminated with a "crack". one single sound was enough to ruin everything he'd worked up to until now. it was yet another late evening spent practicing serves anD HIS BEST FRIEND WAS WAITING FOR HIM OUTSIDE, TELLING HIM TO JUST FUCKING STOP AND COME HOME. AND OH, HOW MESSED UP IT WAS FOR TADASHI AS HE COMPLETELY IGNORED THE WARNING and the pain that'd been bulding in his knee for a while, TOSSING THE BALL UP IN THE AIR. IT WAS A PERFECT TOSS - TOO BAD HE DIDN'T GET TO HIT IT. As soon as he attempted to jump, a small "crack" resonated throughout the building and he felt himself fall on the floor. His best friend rushed in, helped him up and brought him to a hospital as soon as possible.
originally, the doctors had told tadashi he'd just have to undergo surgery and in a maximum of 6 months, he'd be ready to play yet again. Right after surgery, however, he was told the final verdict: He was not going to be able to play again. he'd have to wear a knee brace and be happy that he'd even been able to get out of it while still being able to walk decently. If limping meant decently, that is.
And just like that, everything he'd ever worked up to was ruined. he'd gotten a cane he'd have to carry around, exercises to make in order to not get his knee even worse and a specific avoidance of any sport whatsoever. The one thing he was good at -- Ruined. The one place where he finally felt like he had a purpose in -- Ruined. He couldn't even bear going past the gym without having that godawful "crack" resonate in his mind.
He'd become really self-conscious of his injury, he couldn't fucking climb up the stairs properly...In short, even with his friends' reassurance, he knew it'd never be the same. all of his anxieties suddenly fell onto him - While so well hidden under the cunning impression he'd make, now everything had seemed to break down, just as his knee did.
In his third year, his parents finally decided to have him switch schools. That's how he found himself at a completely new school, with no friends to reassure him and yet another gym to haunt him, apparently. But he had to keep the facade of being totally indifferent up, i guess.
personality-wise, tadashi used to be pretty much of a small brat. but not in a bad way, to be honest. he was instagram famous and enjoyed making jokes and keeping up a fairly flirty-but-not-quite personality. There was a nagging anxiety about never really succeeding in the back of his mind, but he'd chosen to ignore it. after the knee incident, however, well, it'd all fallen down and now not only did he have to deal with all of his self-depricating thoughts, but also with keeping his "cheery" personality intact around others, which is proving to be, even now, quite difficult. He still hopes he'll somehow get over it, get over the awful feeling he still gets whenever he sees his family and his trophies, but he's fairly sure it'll never happen.
