It took Jen about half an hour - give or take - to make her way to the Mukami mansion. It really was out of the way though, not that this surprised her much, but she told herself that perhaps a taxi or something would have been better. Oh well, at least the exercise was good.
...they literally live in a mansion. She double-checked the address to make sure that she had the correct location, but there was no mistaking it. Jen couldn't help but chuckle to herself at how quaintly cliche it was, a family of vampires living in a mansion. Light gray brick, a semicircular walkway, a fucking fountain in the front lawn, perfect landscaping... good lord, they really must be rich.
The dhampir approached the door, and her first instinct said to knock, but just as she raised her hand, she stopped. Oh yeah... he didn't want his brothers to know. But why?
She pulled her phone back out, and fired off a message, "I'm at the front door." Although she didn't mind helping someone that she considered on relatively good terms, she hoped that this was serious - it's still a school night, and they had only a couple of hours before it started.
[attr="class","textieno"]Pain, nothing but excruciating pain has been overwhelming the eldest Mukami. The source of it all started on his head, as if an extreme impact was the cause of this. On the floor, surrounded by spilt cold soup in cans, a bottle of bourbon and a cracked shot glass, Ruki’s body was completely sprawled on the hard marble floor. His phone suddenly notified for a text message, which resulted him to groan and clasp his hands to his head, as if the sound worsen his major migraine. Slowly, he turned his head to where the phone is and reached for it, his eyes barely even open.[break][break]
"I'm at the front door."[break][break]
He read the message, knowing that’s Jen since he invited her to mansion, which is something he rarely even does if not, never at all. Does he even have the strength to get up and head for the door? He doesn’t even want to bother since his extreme headache’s taking over him.[break][break]
Lesson learn to not drink almost the whole bottle of bourbon…[break][break]
Oh forget it, like Hell he’s going to move. His body felt heavy, and his head is throbbing like mad. Ruki made the decision to just reply to the dhampir via text. It’s a good thing she didn’t knock, or else someone besides Ruki would head for the door. Not willing to risk Kou doing that, or else everything’s going to be spoiled.[break][break]
He texts her, “Door’s unlocked...just come in. Shut the door, lightly.”[break][break]
After sending the text, he drops his phone on the floor after, and placing his hand back on his head, while he groans in pain and irritation.
A couple of minutes passed, and Jen felt her phone vibrate, notifying her of Ruki's text message. Oh... he wants her to just come in. Everything about this seemed a little strange, so she went on guard as she turned the handle - slowly, gently - and stepped inside. She closed the door behind her from the moment she was across the threshold; having more than once snuck out of her own home when she was younger, Jen had the technique of quietly closing a door almost down to a science.
She took a quick look around to orient herself, but she didn't expect that when she looked down, there was Ruki; he was sprawled out, face down. A mostly-empty bottle of bourbon, a shot glass, opened cans of soup with a spoon still toppling out of one. Jen knew immediately what happened here.
"God damn," she took another moment to absorb the scene before her, "you had a Hell of a night here. Shoulda told me you were hung over, I would have brought bananas."
Jen knelt down so she was closer to his level, "We should get you to something softer. Need any help getting up?"
To indicate her intent to follow through on that, she extended a hand so it was within his reach, but didn't touch him.
[attr="class","textieno"]Despite Jen’s voice being somewhat low, Ruki groaned in response to her. With some of the strength he still has in him, he lifts his head up to look at her. His slate eyes halfway open, leftover soup on the corner of his mouth and his hair terribly disheveled.[break][break]
“Keep your voice down, I feel like I’ve been impacted by some strong force…” He moaned out. Can this pain go away, or at least when will it go away?[break][break]
He had to admit it, “Honestly, since you’re a bartender. I figured you would know about this.” Dropping his head, again a part of the eldest Mukami felt woozy. Is it nausea? Hopefully it’s not that, or else Ruki would want Jen escorted out for a moment.[break][break]
“My room...take me there. My brothers are upstairs so we can stay quiet easily.” Unless Kou decides to invade for some reason. “Bananas are in the kitchen…” more throbbing pain overwhelms his head, causing him to hiss, “...and some water would be nice.”[break][break]
Once again he had to use his strength lifting up his head, while in extreme pain. He took a glance at her hand, only to dismiss her. “I can do it.” he attempts to push himself up, feeling a bit wobbly on the arms and legs. Luckily, yet very slow, Ruki manages to bring himself up (not completely straight, though), but began losing balance. If he knocks over something, he’s going to get caught and with Jen here, it’s only going to look more suspicious. He tried falling to a chair, only to have his hands on the arm of it and nearly fall completely, but lands on his knees.[break][break]
Although Jen imagined that Ruki wasn't in the best shape, she still was taken slightly aback at just how disheveled he was; from what she knew of him, he never would have left food in the corner of his mouth or anything like that.
"Welcome to having a hangover," she responded to his complaint, making her voice as she could manage, almost to a whisper, "I've been there and done that more often than I should admit to."
Ruki requested that they go to his room: probably not a bad choice of location. She sighed a little, and acquiesced, "Sounds good. You'll need to tell me where it is first though."
She stepped back a tad and watched as the vampire attempted to stand himself up, only to collapse again. Jen raised an eyebrow, and stood up, reaching both hands out this time, "You sure you're okay, booboo?" He probably wouldn't be happy with that impromptu pet name, but it was so instinctive that she didn't have time to stop it; he was just going to have to live with it, "Vampire healing abilities or not, I don't want you stumbling around hurting yourself if you don't need to. I know you probably want to maintain your pride and all that but honestly, given the circumstances, you don't have much to lose at the moment."
Jen met his eyes as best she could, and spoke with a gentle yet serious tone, "I'm here to help you, I can't do that if you won't let me. I'll walk you up to your room and then I'll get you whatever you need, okay?"
[attr="class","textieno"]“I’m not surprised” For somebody like Jen, going to bars underage (like he did the past few weeks), the first time experiencing a hangover probably wasn’t pretty, not one single bit.[break][break]
“It’s just down the hallway.” Ruki weakly pointed out, “Last room, can’t miss it…” Never did he think he’s going to have Jen in his room, or even the Mukami manor, in general. He’d always thought that she’ll never be in this place, aside from it being forbidden grounds, just her being the mansion at all, and it’s all because he found her annoying. He still can’t bring himself to think that he fully despises her, because admittedly, he doesn’t. Now, he can’t bring himself to push her away, not just because he invited her here, but because he...needs her?[break][break]
Ruki slowly turned his eyes towards her, what happened to her not saying pet names? Well, he has no choice but to let it pass. The vampire has no time to lecture her about it, the pain’s too distracting right now. She understood exactly how he is, he doesn’t want to let his pride fall all because he needs some woman to assist him for this. Can he really let himself do that? It’s only for tonight. That’s all he has to think, it’s only just tonight and after that, things can go back the way they were.[break][break]
There was small eye contact between him and Jen, she’s willing to help and he’s trying to get up on his feet again. Pulling himself up, though struggling while at it, Ruki only managed to keep himself standing with the support of the chair’s arm. He knew however, that if he dares take another step, he’s going to lose balance, and more than likely fall on the floor, with a chance of landing on his face. That’s why he invited the dhampir, right? For her to help him out. He has no choice but to let her guide him through.[break][break]
“You may do so.” He breathed out, not only did that give her the right to assist him through, but also the permission lay her hands on him and at least drag him out of the foyer.
Good, he was willing to listen to reason over his pride... for now. Now was all she needed though; with that, she guided herself under Ruki's arm, yoking it across her shoulders as she moved her hand to grip his forearm. Jen stretched her other arm over his back, and braced her legs, "Alright, I've got you, you should be able to walk with me as support. Take it easy, I'll work with whatever pace is comfortable for you."
At the back of her mind, she certainly noticed that coldness of his body, even though what she could touch of him, was felt through the fabric of his shirt.
Luckily, he didn't seem to be terribly heavy, and Ruki seemed at least somewhat able to walk with her help, even if his steps were a touch unsteady. Jen helped navigate around the cans of soup and slowly, coordinated with him to get him up the stairs. Once they reached the upstairs, they had to be fairly quiet to avoid attracting his brothers' attention, but they made it to his room undetected, making sure to close the door behind them.
Between steps, Jen took glances around, absorbing their new surroundings as she did so; she wasn't terribly surprised by how minimalist Ruki's room seemed, though she did appreciate the fine-looking furniture, and more so, the paintings on the far wall.
The dhampir guided Ruki over to the bed, and helped him keep his balance while he laid down. Once he seemed to be settled, she darted over and closed the curtains ("they're black... still kind of cliche, but in this case, pretty helpful," she thought) so as not to let too much light in and risk intensifying his headache.
After that was taken care of, Jen returned to the bedside, and maintained her whisper, "So bananas and water. Anything else before I go back downstairs?"
[attr="class","textieno"]With the support from Jen, Ruki was able to walk well, though not perfectly as straight as he had hoped. He kept a steady with her, not going too far ahead where she has to pull him back, but going behind where she would drag him, either. At least that’s what it seems to him. Admittedly, with some parts of their bodies pressing, and even with the clothes on, he still felt a lot of her warmth.[break][break]
Once they had reached to his bedroom, it was rather relieving that none of his brothers went out of theirs. An long explanation would need to be made, badly. Jen had placed Ruki on his bed and then, closing the curtains so that most of the light won’t hit through. Less pain for him.[break][break]
"So bananas and water. Anything else before I go back downstairs?"[break][break]
Yes, a mallet from the kitchen to knock him out, sounds great at the moment. “That will be all, just get what’s necessary.” He dismissed her. Once she left his quarters, Ruki started to think about all of this? Why did he really need her in the first place, Yuma could’ve actually helped out, with all of his strength. Azusa might be more of reassuring type than one to carry him. As for Kou, forget it, nothing but humiliation.[break][break]
So why Jen? Is she really that necessary? Or did he want to see...no. She’s only just for help and all, his brothers can’t know about this. For now, right? No, at all. Nothing’s going on between them, not at all, not ever. But still...he seem can’t find the actual right answer for this.[break][break]
Jen nodded when she received his last directive, and exited the room quietly, making sure to use the same technique on the bedroom door as she had with the front. She practically tip-toed back down the hall and down the stairs, measuring her breaths so as to pace herself. Once she touched back down on the marble on the ground floor, she first went to pick up the spent cans of soup ("did he just eat these cold? There's no bowls or anything, and you can't microwave aluminum...") and dropped them off in the kitchen sink to be rinsed. She would have done so herself, but she didn't want to risk attracting unwanted attention; she returned to the foyer to get the cracked shot glass - which she threw away - and set the bottle by the sink as well.
Next order of business: water. Jen really didn't want to turn on the sink if she didn't have to; that, and if Kou was any bit the spoiled idol he seemed to be, there was bound to be some kind of filtered or bottled water already in the fridge.
She carefully unsealed the refrigerator door, and a quick scan revealed some bottled water off to one side. He won't notice if one is missing, right? Jen snatched one toward the back, then turned to the rest of the kitchen. It didn't take long for her to find the bananas, which she didn't bother with splitting one off and simply grabbed the entire bunch. Making her way back up the stairs quickly but quietly was a challenge, but she managed it.
Jen dipped back into Ruki's room, quiet as a shadow, again making sure to close (and lock) the door behind her. Then, she set the fruit down on the coffee table near the couch, and immediately set to work uncapping the water, "Alright, you'll probably need to sit up for a second. Don't want you spilling water all over yourself."
She added, "Any improvements so far? Need me to get you a trash can in case you gotta purge?"
[attr="class","textieno"]Once she had made her return to the bedroom, with the whole bunch of bananas and a water bottle (probably Kou’s, but who cares, he has plenty of more bottles.), Ruki began to sit up slightly straight as Jen asked him to and clutched his head, for a moment; he sat up a little too quickly than he should.[break][break]
“Better than the moment I had woken up, but still finding this pain troublesome.” He answered her as he groans, not in pain but more of frustration. Hopefully as she said, the bananas will do the trick. She’s experienced hangovers before, she would know all of this and how to ease it. Once again to himself, lesson learned.[break][break]
He did feel a bit woozy, but not to where vomiting is going to happen anytime soon. But just in case of the nauseated feeling being so sudden, “Yes, please.” the first time he actually says please to her. It’s honestly rather odd saying that to Jen, mostly because at first, he wasn’t that fond of her at all. It’s not like their chemistry is not that any better as of now, but still. Which is why he still can’t seem to figure out why she’s needed in the first place, they don’t have much of a great relationship going on, it’s just an acquaintanceship. To be viewed as an ally from Ruki would be a miracle, but even an acquaintance is almost near the same level.[break][break]
Silence started to creep in, it would be awkward if neither starts to speak to each other. Though being quiet is necessary, since Ruki doesn’t want his brothers to know about Jen’s presence...damn it. Aside from just being silent in general, there’s also another thing that needs to be covered at all costs; her scent. The scent from Jen will be a dead giveaway, especially since it leads all the way to his sleeping quarters. If there’s one brother Ruki knows will catch on to this, immediately, it’s going to be Kou. He will tease him nonstop about bringing Jen over here, especially since it’s leading to his bedroom. Then the whole idea of him and her even…[break][break]
...the scent’s got to be taken care immediately, at least once she leaves, and whenever the hangover wears off for the vampire.[break][break]
Honestly, Ruki shouldn’t be this worried about something like this. Usually, if there’s something that seems out of place, the eldest Mukami knows exactly what to say and how to dismiss it, easily. Suddenly however, he can’t seem to do that with him being around Jen. Kou’s practically paparazzi with him now, and for some reason, he’s unable to get out of the twist. How can this be that difficult? It shouldn’t be, but it just so happens that it is. Thus, the frustration.[break][break]
Right now, he can’t get rid of Jen because she’s helping him out, for now. Awkward silence is starting to kick in, so someone has to break the silence. Him or her? This is another, yet, not exactly rare situation Ruki ever falls into because he doesn’t exactly have conversations all figured out with Jen. Anybody else, he can insult anyone with no hesitation, lecture his brothers, talk about anything that involves business and all sorts. Then there’s Jen, and his mind goes completely blank, struggling to collect any thoughts on what to say. Why?[break][break]
“You know, despite you helping me and all...I’m surprised you haven’t decided to leave. Do you tend to make sure the person you’re helping out is in good standards or?” He slowly had his eyes turn to her. The pain has lessened as the minutes pass by, but it still throbs.
"Well, hopefully once you're hydrated and full of potassium, you'll start feeling more like yourself," Jen handed over the water bottle, then returned to the coffee table to fetch the bananas. She snapped one off at the stem and got it half-peeled after setting the rest down within Ruki's reach.
She, herself, was still unsure as to why he'd chosen to reach out to her; her, of all people, whom he'd mostly expressed varying levels of annoyance with. Then again, he did seem not to completely hate her company, considering that he'd stuck around for conversation when at any time he could have easily left. He did seem that type of personality, who didn't give a shit who he offended if he didn't want to do something.
What had changed since the last time they met...?
Luckily, it seemed that Ruki did, in fact, have a wastebasket in the room; Jen made a beeline for it once he affirmed that he wanted it, and set it by the bedside. She was used to him asking her questions every so often, but she wasn't sure she really expected this one:
“You know, despite you helping me and all...I’m surprised you haven’t decided to leave. Do you tend to make sure the person you’re helping out is in good standards or?”
The dhampir thought about this for a moment, holding the link between their gazes, then responded, "You asked me for help, and I'm fulfilling that request," she chuckled a bit, "I've more than once been called the 'mom friend', like generally if I consider you in good standing with me, I don't mind seeing to it that you're alright. Why?"
Jen glanced at a spot near the foot of the bed, then back to Ruki, "You mind if I sit down here? At least until you need something else?"
[attr="class","textieno"]He took the bottle and banana from her. Like she said, hopefully that’ll be the case. Before eating the banana, Ruk drank the water first. Only just a couple sips, not chugging down the water. Not like the bourbon he had earlier. What a mistake he made.[break][break]
He started drinking after his brothers went to their rooms, keeping himself distant from them throughout the day. Little did Jen know, the eldest Mukami was drinking because he contemplated about his views on her. How she became a complete acquaintance to him. That conversation they had back at the historical part of Kamina, very late at night. The fact that she told him about how she can’t seem to get bored while talking to him. It left him thinking, and it never stopped bothering him since. To the point where bourbon was needed to forget about. Conclusion, it failed.[break][break]
"I've more than once been called the 'mom friend', like generally if I consider you in good standing with me, I don't mind seeing to it that you're alright. Why?"[break][break]
“It’s nothing,” He lied, glancing down at the water bottle. For once, he’s actually lying. Usually, he stays honest about everything.[break][break]
“You may sit down.” He has no mindset to lecture her or anything that will not allow her to. Besides, what’s the point? She’s sat near him before.[break][break]
Now with that sentence coming back to him. He can’t really keep things hidden, “Actually, I was just wondering, since we don’t have that much of a great chemistry.” Well, that talk they had before didn’t exactly break off the acquaintanceship they have. Especially how it had concluded. It did seem that it was close to end it between the two, due to how the argument was going,. At the end of it though, it seemed as though something redeemed. Ruki did not expect that to happen, at all. Especially from what she said.
Honestly, Jen was grateful for the opportunity to sit - especially on a bed - after the walk to find the place, and then being up and about to help Ruki regain his bearings, "Oh my god, thank you."
She settled in on that spot, crossing her legs once she did so, and leaned back a touch in an attempt to relax. It wasn't as if she'd been immune to the tension that had brewed between them that night, it still tingled in her spine as if it were threads in the bone; the difference being, she almost hadn't expected to hear from him again since he very nearly walked off for good. Jen couldn't put words to why, but she had hoped that he'd change his mind (even if she didn't count on it happening, given how stubborn Ruki seemed).
So it was, in essence, still a bit of a shock that she was here right now.
The question that came out of his mouth next, was met with a slightly puzzled look from the dhampir. Genuinely, she found herself momentarily dumbstruck, "What do you mean? We seem to get along fine, at least when we're not butting heads about what constitutes a 'too private' question."
Jen was tempted to inquire further, if he meant certain kinds of chemistry. Not-strictly-platonic types of chemistry. The thought of it stirred a conflicting mix of feelings in her; it wasn't even something she'd pondered on, beyond an occasional intrusive thought or two. She just saw Ruki as a potential friend, nothing more or less.
[attr="class","textieno"]“No need to.” More like, he didn’t understand why she is thanking him. Then again, even staying in this room is a privilege, in general so there’s that. She’s getting a lot of privileges at the moment. First, being at the mansion, and now, his room. What’s next, spending a night here? It can’t go that far. At least, it shouldn’t.[break][break]
"What do you mean? We seem to get along fine, at least when we're not butting heads about what constitutes a 'too private' question."[break][break]
“That’s what I mean, that.” He makes eye contact with her, “You know why I tend to not answer those questions, correct? Simply because it’s not any of your business and also, because I advised that you forget about them.” Another sip of water was taken after. He felt that a reminder is necessary, “So you saying that our chemistry is fine, makes me fail to understand how.”[break][break]
Sure, they have other conversations that don’t poke around the personal, but they mostly end when things get to that line, which is something Ruki’s not fond of. Perhaps that’s where Jen’s aiming at about them getting along fine, so far. What else could she have been aiming for? There’s nothing else to aim at because Ruki and Jen don’t see each other any other way. Right? He knows he doesn’t view the dhampir any way that involves something else, and he’s pretty sure she doesn’t view him that way, either.[break][break]
Unless...no, their bond is not great. It’s somewhere to where they don’t loathe each other, or aren’t annoyed with each other’s company (at least Jen’s, Ruki’s more questionable), but is it enough to consider them even friends? For Ruki, not exactly. But yet, right now they’re still here in the same spot, talking normally. It’s all and all fine, on the other hand, the vampire’s rather confused.[break][break]
Another bad throb of pain coursed around Ruki’s head, causing him to clutch tightly around the water bottle and the banana, and him hissing, “Damn it, that was excruciating. I’ll admit, I’m owning up to my mistake for this.” He may as well put the cards on the table, “It was because I attempted to forget some things.”
"You know why I tend to not answer those questions, correct? Simply because it’s not any of your business and also, because I advised that you forget about them.”
Jen maintained a fairly calm expression, "Well, I kind of figured that. Most people have a line they draw somewhere," unconsciously, and without any particular aim, she glanced at her fingernails while she gathered her next thought, "but I think where our miscommunication lay, is that our boundaries are very different. I apologize if I've made you uncomfortable, it's simply that sometimes I have to find out the hard way, what's off-limits or not."
She met his eyes again, "Generally, once I figure out where your line is, I'll respect it," a half-smile peeked on her lips, as if attempting reassurance, "I know I can be pretty outrageous sometimes, but I don't like to do so at the expense of others."
Empathetic as Jen was, she almost winced in kind when Ruki recoiled from the rush of pain hitting his head; she couldn't really do anything else to help it, was the worst part. However, she raised her eyebrow again at his apparent confession; it wasn't uncommon for people to drink to forget, and perhaps he did so because of whatever was in his past, that he got so defensive about.
"...if it's not too invasive a question," she spoke gently, almost in a soothing way, "what was it you were trying to forget?"
Admittedly, she also wouldn't be surprised if something about that night triggered an urge to wipe his short-term memory... but what? He didn't seem particularly remorseful about anything that had happened...
Did it have something to do with the so-called "chemistry" (or lack thereof) that he asked about? Nah... that couldn't be it. He'd made a point to remark on her being 'salacious', she recalled him looking at her with even a touch of disgust (or maybe more than a touch?) when they first met. Ruki didn't seem like the sort who bothered to hide such sentiments.
Even so... she also had known men who called her these things, even as they sized her body up like she was a cut of meat at the market.
