Jen was rather relieved that Raven didn't probe any further, and happily stuck to the almost-always-safe topic of food. She glanced back at the white chocolate cheesecake, and replied, "Maybe you prefer lighter flavors? Sometimes those are better for really appreciating delicate desserts, like cheesecake or macarons. You wanna talk a weakness of mine, it's macarons, or truffles, or crème brûlée... almost anything super creamy, really."
The dhampir rarely made desserts - she considered herself more savory-tongued than sweet-toothed - but creamy mouth-feel confections often invited her to make exceptions. She could make decent crème brûlée, mousse, truffles, and cheesecake, and although she was still learning due to the difficulty and touchiness, Jen was inching closer to figuring out macarons. Some big cities, such as Washington D.C., had bakeries specializing in these high-maintenance treats, and she tended to make a point to sniff them out when she could.
"Well, other than matcha, I'm a huge fan of tropical fruits and berries, like generally," Jen took another bite of her dessert, "I like my sweets punctuated with a bit of tang, or even spices like cinnamon or cardamom. I also fucking love mint and dark chocolate, but I have to take them in small doses, usually."
Jen mused a bit more, "Honestly though, if I have cravings, it's usually for more savory stuff, you know? Seafood of almost any kind is practically the key to my heart," she might as well have swooned at the thought of it, the way her face lit up, "but like, you're more likely to see me reaching for pretzels and cheese, or popcorn or something if I'm itching for a snack. Salty things, you know."
She listened patiently as Raven listed off various places and activities around Kamina, though she did find herself intrigued by the fact of there being a red light district. However, given the young woman's flustering, Jen figured she likely didn't know much about it beyond its existence.
"Hm, I'd say I'm a party person," she purred after another bite, "when and where do you usually haunt in that regard? It'd be good to know what sort of crowds to expect so II can match the aesthetic."
Another thought passed through her mind, and she tapped her cheek, "I might not feel the need to go outside the city for a while, not unless there's something not too far out that might be worth the trip?"
That could be the case. Honestly, Raven did mostly prefer anything that has a lot of flavor to it (if done, correctly). White chocolate can be much of a delicacy, though. Super creamy sweets, the vampire really likes where Jen’s coming from. She’s one who knows her types of foods very well.
The vampire knows how to make desserts, cheesecake being her favorite to make, though every now and then, there’s cookies and pies. Some odd reason, she did have trouble making crème brûlée. Unsure of the reason, it either becomes too liquidy, or even too sweet. Raven does like the dish but she could never bake it right without a mistake somewhere. In the end sadly, the vampire began hating the idea to make the dessert.“Well, since you’re the creamy fan here, you ever tried crème brûlée cheesecake?”
Practically jabbing her fork into her piece of white chocolate cheesecake and shoving it in her mouth, Raven spoke while still chewing, “Nice choices. For me, I almost eat anything, but there are some exceptions.” She attempted on thinking about what foods don’t come to her liking, but her brain has blanked out. “Can’t think of anything, at the moment. So...why is it that you gotta take small doses of mint and dark chocolate?”
Wow, like her passion for cheesecake, Jen sounds like she has a passion for seafood. The vampire could tell by her face that Jen seems to have such favors for it. Raven couldn’t blame her for that, anyone can have a strong liking towards something. Especially when it involves food. “Do you happen to like curry? I mean, that’s pretty savory and all sorts, and I can assure you any restaurant here probably has that. Probably seafood curry while at it, since you seem really fond of it.”
Okay, thank Raven’s lucky stars that Jen didn’t poke through about the red light district. Who knows how much her face would’ve heated up explaining that area. Honestly, anything explicit isn’t really that bad to her, she’s seen some things, she knows about the intimacy and dare she admit, done some actions. However, just talking about it felt rather...odd? The vampire has difficulty being so open about it, despite living for two centuries.
Before Raven could take another bite, she looked up at Jen, “At the nightclubs? Well, you’re more than likely gonna see me before school sometimes, that’s usually on Thursday and Fridays. As for the weekends, I skip school sometimes on Saturdays and will be there from nine o’ clock til midnight. Sundays, same time except my time of departure is later.”
Great, saves her an explanation about outside Kamina, “Fair enough.”
Jen genuinely had to pause, to take in the enormity of what she'd just been told; there was something out there, that combined two of her favorite desserts into one amazing treat? She glanced down at her two pieces of cheesecake, now almost finished, then to the counter, then at Raven, "...do they sell that here? I didn't see it in the display up there or else I would have gotten it!"
Even if they did have it, though, Jen wouldn't have any room in her stomach for it after finishing what's already in front of her.
"Mint and dark chocolate," she tapped her fork lightly as she gathered her words, "well, with mint, it tends to cut the appetite, and with the cooling sensation it brings, it can be overwhelming if you have too much of it at once. As for dark chocolate, I mean, far be it from me to reject good chocolate... but like, I can't handle those things like devil's food cake and death by chocolate. It's just excessive, really~ I need something to balance it out."
In the middle of taking the second-to-last bite of her chocolate & raspberry, the dhampir tuned in to Raven's inquiry. A certain smirk appeared on her lips while she finished what was in her mouth, then she puffed up with confidence, "I fucking love curry, especially seafood curry! Granted, nothing and no one beats mother's cooking, you know, but I'm always willing to check out curry joints. Only go to like, the tiny hole-in-the-wall places that are family-owned though - those are always the best. Generally, if I judge a curry place, I order their lamb curry - if you can get lamb right, you'd be hard pressed to fuck anything else up."
Jen chuckled, "Part of me was honestly excited to move to Japan because seafood is so much more accessible here, you know? The prices aren't as exorbitant as they are in most places in the States. Plus it's probably super fresh~ I've been eating healthier here, that's for sure."
Hmm... perhaps the vampire had misunderstood part of the question? Or maybe Jen herself hadn't been clear?
"Alright, so I take it the clubs you frequent have a kind of goth aesthetic? Like should I bust out the dark colors or what?" she twisted her lips up a bit in thought, then admitted, "I admit, I'd be curious about that sort of scene, but like... I think I'd need someone to guide me through it. That's if you'd be cool with me joining you sometime, whenever I feel adventurous~"
“They usually serve some crème brûlée cheesecake over here. Guess not for now, people must really like that cheesecake a lot.” Raven pursed her lips together and gave out a shrug, “Can’t say I blame them. Had I known how to make it, I would serve you some.” That’s if the whole cheesecake will remain by the time she met up with the brunette. A guilty pleasure that the vampire couldn’t even regret.
She gazed upon the finished piece of matcha passionfruit, and the nearly finished piece of chocolate and raspberry that Jen has; must’ve enjoyed those two flavors like no other. Raven couldn’t help but laugh as she stuffs a huge chunk of white chocolate cheesecake in her mouth. She’s not going to be the bitchy type at her for it, “Hungry, were ya?”
Finishing her first piece of white chocolate, immediately the vampire went for her second piece. She continues to stare at Jen and listens to her explanation about her deals with mint and dark chocolate, despite the sound of constant chewing in her mouth. She lightly placed the fork down next to her cheesecake and clasps her hands together.
“Understandable.” As much as devil’s food cake and death by chocolate sound great and all, to eat it all is rather a hassle. Besides, the flavors are rather strong, especially since it’s dark chocolate. Not exactly Raven’s favorite kind of chocolate, but it’s a delicacy. “I can sort of handle the dark chocolate, but then after a while, I feel rather sick if I eat too much of it. Mint however, not so badly but I get what you mean with the cooling sensation. For balance, mint chocolate chip usually does the trick.”
Right on target. She guessed correctly, the savory foods and seafood gave off a perfect hint. Another chunk and when Jen mentioned about curry joints, that gave Raven a spark of an idea. She tried to say it but her mouth has been already stuffed with cheesecake. Swallowing first, Raven went a little jumpy so she wouldn’t forget, and even clapping her hands a little bit, “There’s a couple of curry joints out in the east of downtown, they serve pretty damn good curry over there, and I’m sure you’ll be in luck of getting some great lamb curry.”
Ah yes, when it comes down to food, Japan’s usually a fresh and healthy area. “I’m guessing comparing to this country, your home country is not as healthy. Not trying to make any offense or anything, just an assumption.”
Jen clarified herself more, and that in result gave the vampire a jolt. She usually goes out alone but having a partner for nightclubs isn’t at all a bad idea. “I can definitely guide you through that some time, and definitely yes, bring on the dark colors. Unless you really like being the center of attention, then a bit of some bright colors will do the trick.” She didn’t take much notice that her last piece is almost gone. The idea of hanging out with Jen sounds delightful, she seems like the down-to-earth kind of type.
“Just say the word and definitely we can meet up there some time.”
Jen pondered for a moment, "I've made crème brûlée before, and I've made cheesecake before... I might be able to make the crème brûlée cheesecake if I tinkered a little. But," she glanced at the counter again, then back to Raven, "maybe some time I'll special order some here, yeah? I may have to let you know when I do that."
The dhampir finished off her matcha cheesecake, then set her sights back on the dark chocolate, "What do you usually get when you go to those places? Like, do you also get the lamb or are you more about the chicken? Or maybe you prefer the vegetarian stuff?" Jen shrugged, "Great thing about Indian food, at least, is that you have tons of vegetarian options if you're so inclined. I'm certainly an omnivore, but it's nice to have non-meat things that aren't bland."
She couldn't help but laugh a little at Raven's inquiry about healthy food, "I mean, a little poking around in most cities will usually net you something good, but the problem is that it still tends to be hella expensive compared to shitty food. The difference here is that fresh food is more the norm here than the exception, you feel me?"
"Dark colors, huh?" Jen thought on this some more as she took another bite, "I do have some black clothes, but those are more classic and elegant rather than Gothic, you know?"
Another chuckle as she took in her second-to-last bite, "You might have to take me shopping first. Dad would kill me if I skipped school, so we'd have to plan for a day when we're both available. Maybe a Sunday night? Or a Saturday after school lets out?"
One final bite, along with a napkin to make sure nothing was left in the corners of her mouth, then Jen pulled her phone out and passed it to the vampire; she put on an exaggerated accent, with a playful smirk, "Ayo gurl, lemme get ya digits~"
The girl can cook, if she can manage to make crème brûlée cheesecake, boy would Raven want her to teach it. She’s usually a cooking expert it’s just that damn dessert, she can never make it correctly. “Of course, we can both get a piece of crème brûlée cheesecake when that happens.”
Admittedly, Raven doesn’t exactly hang around those areas like she does at bakeries. That doesn’t mean she’s never been there, however. Usually, it’s when her cravings for savory foods kick in out of nowhere that the vampire would tend to come by to these food joints. “Mostly I’m for chicken, but there’s times where I get shrimp curry instead, if I want to ease my seafood cravings.” She couldn’t imagine the idea of being a vegetarian. Sorry, the meat is too good to not devour.
Expensive healthy food? Sounds preposterous. It even made Raven cringe a bit, “I didn’t think healthy foods would be more on the pricy side, than something that’s rather not suitable for the human body. Good thing over here, we value health like no other.” Then again, the vampire doesn’t need to worry about that since her body’s...dead in a way?
Oh well, got to respect others’ parents, right? “After school Saturday sounds fine with me. There’s a mall here that tends to have a few good shopping areas to buy those kind of clothes. I go there all the time when I’m wanting more accessories or outfits.” She winked at her.
One more bite of her white chocolate cheesecake, and she is set. God, was that so delicious, she ought to get more, but not now. When Jen passed her phone to Raven, and asking for her number, Raven gazed at it for a moment. “Oh, no problem!” Remembering her own number, the vampire took the device and placed it in the dhampir’s phone, handing it back to her.
“Contact me anytime, whenever you want to hang out or have any questions. My door’s always open.”
All in all, Jen was really taking a liking to this Raven girl. They both seemed to be down for the same kinds of foods, are both up for going dancing, plus, she was glad that she seemed to respect the decision not to skip classes - if there was one thing that had kept the dhampir from getting in with "the wrong crowd", it was the healthy respect for education that had been instilled in her from birth.
She finished the last bite of her dark chocolate cheesecake, and as the vampire across from her returned the phone, she flashed a small grin and lowered her voice, "One more question though, Raven: you drink at all?"
Without knowing her real age, Jen put the device away and leaned in, "Because I could get us a little some some if that's what you're into. I have ways."
Meaning, using her old American ID, which said she was in her 20's.
She stood up, and grabbed the empty plates and tray to take to the trash receptacle, "I'll shoot you a text so that you'll have my number as well. I'm down for almost anything, so we should try and find a day where we can go get some actual food too, yeah? Curry for lunch, cheesecake for dessert?"
@reikookazaki we can probably wrap this thread up in the next couple of posts, I think?
"One more question though, Raven: you drink at all?"
“Of course I drink. Like I drink water, soda, and juice. You know, the basic beverages.” Reality, she knew what Jen’s talking about, but Raven only wanted to poke in some fun on that question, “Just playing, yes I do drink. If it’s serious drinking, absinthe is the usual. But mainly, I do like mixed drinks aside from that.”
Folding her arms, she leaned in on the table as well, “I’m listening. Sounds like you know exactly what to do.”
Watching her take what remains on the tray to the receptacles, the vampire got up from her seat, and placing her hands in her pockets as she keeps her ears open while Jen talks about plans of hanging out for lunch. She has no reason to reject the invitation, and besides, it’s food after all.
“I think that’s a good idea. Any time will do, I’m available all the time.”
It’s time for their depart, until next time they speak with each other again. It’s guaranteed that Jen’s the kind of person Raven is very fond with. Indeed, the dhampir's an extrovert, full of life, down-to-earth, and open for anything. She’s been taking a liking towards her and hopefully, they’ll talk much more often when given the chance.
“Until then, I’ll see you around Jen. Who knows, you might see me at school out of ransom. It happens.” She chuckled as she heads for the door.
