Two women were standing in front a bookstore shelf, each holding a book, examining it. There was silence between them, but that was not for long. As one of them picked up another book from the shelf while still holding the one which was already in her hand, another spoke to her.
"Ne, Rissan, I'm going to look for some novels over there. Come see me when you're done, okay?"
"...Sure."
As soon as the other woman who was speaking to her was gone, Seri let out a sigh and looked at the books in her hands, considering which one to buy. She had examined them, reading through a few pages, and came to a conclusion that both were of decent quality and worth to buy. The only problem was which one to pick because even though she loved reading, Seri rarely bought books for herself. She would rather visit the library and read there or borrow some home. If she ever bought any book, more often than not it was something very important to have and/or of a great interest. The reason was simply because she didn't want to waste too much money.
While it was true that books are the window of the world, if one bought them without ever reading, then they would lost their purpose, and that would be a shame. Unacceptable. Moreover, from a financial standpoint, she would definitely be broke if she succumbed to her desire to buy as much books as possible for her own edification. She did not need to worry about college fees because she earned a scholarship, but she needed to worry about something else, like the food for creatures that dwelled in her house.
It was not like Seri or her family was poor or something. They had wealth and all—the reason why she worked as a private tutor was for something else than money. Despite coming from a fairly wealthy family, Seri had been taught how to save money and not to rely on her family's wealth. Not only that, ever since she was a little girl, it was rare for her and her twin for being pampered. If they wanted something they must work hard to earn it—think about it as a reward—and that did not change at all when they finally became adults.
Another sigh as she put the books together in one hand, finally decided to buy both of them. At least they would be useful, she thought as she walked over to another shelf to see whether if there was anything else that caught her interest like the two gardening related books that were on her hands at the moment. And yes, there was one related to animal husbandry that invoked her curiosity and prompted her to pick it up from the shelf just to check what was actually written inside.

TAG. @geniusloveless WORDS. 466 NOTES. Ruki is already noping on Seri
Returning to the bookstore was not exactly the idea so start the day for Ruki, but he had already finished a book he checked out a few days ago and decided to check it back in early before due date. The book itself wasn't really much of a good read, admittedly and the elder Mukami figured the checking books out now instead of buying them would be a better idea; not having to waste money on a book he didn't find satisfactory.
He already began to plan out the day after he returns the book in his head, most of it involved business he had to take care of and what he should make for dinner for his younger brothers. Nothing really special was going to happen today, unless Karlheinz has something up his sleeve.
Walking in the bookstore's entrance, the atmosphere was very calming, pure silence. Sure, there were a few bits of chit chat, here and there, but not to the point where Ruki would find it obnoxious. He walked on ahead, passing by bookshelves, more focused on going to the customer service desk and check in the book. Since he already had made plans today, he came to the decision to not check out another book for the day. Perhaps some other time and hopefully, a book that could at least reach his taste.
Before reaching to the customer service desk, the vampire passed by a certain bookshelf that mostly had textbooks for college. Although he wasn't in college and still a high school student, it may come to consideration for him to start getting textbooks as Ruki was intelligent enough for college level. His thoughts, however, were interrupted when by the corner of his slate grey eyes caught a glimpse of a familiar blonde woman.
She's here too? Knowing how much of nuisance she was when the had first met back at the shopping center, there was no way to convince Ruki to go and speak with the dhampir, again. He gazed back at the college textbooks and saved the idea of grabbing them for later, as a certain someone has this bookshelf occupied for herself. If he decided to stand here any longer, it is more than likely the annoying dhampir will come up to him and most likely bring up what happened the other day. Admittedly, it was rather a shock to see her here. Not being here at the bookstore, but at the shelf for college textbooks. Was she perhaps a college student? No, maybe a high school student with college level of some subjects. If the female dhampir was truly a college student, Ruki would immediately find her rather disappointing, thinking back on how she was at the shopping center.
The trip to the bookstore was, in fact, unplanned. Seri should be tutoring someone at the moment, but an hour ago Awashima-sensei texted her, saying that today her son was going to take a day off because heinjured himself while playing. At first she was thinking about visiting the public library, but another text came from her classmate, asking whether if Seri could accompany her to the bookstore since she needed to check out a few books. Since she had nothing to do at all until later in the night, the dhampir decided to go along with her friend. After all, when she was thinking about it, there were some books that she needed to check out for herself.
Those books were, to be honest, not the ones that were already in her hands. They were a result of spur of the moment curiosity that stroke the blonde—thank goodness she actually needed them. Else she would waste her money for something unimportant. Though if Izumo found out, he'll be more than likely to tease Seri about how she had never been successful at vegetable gardening, much to her own dismay. Honestly, I suspect he has something to do with my failures.. And I hate it more when it's my own brother.
The animal husbandry book was also spur of the moment curiosity, but this time Seri decided not to buy it since she thought she didn't really need it. At least, not at the moment. She might ask Izumo later if he wanted it because she reckoned he might need it if he really wanted to raise ducks, but for now she just kept that in her mind and moved on to another section of the bookstore after putting the books in her hand into an empty bag provided by the store. This time it was a bookshelf which had college textbooks—she already had most of chemistry textbooks there, but there were these particular textbooks that she needed to check out.
Scanning through the books on the shelf, she finally found one of the books Miyazawa-senpai told her. It was about polymerase chain reaction that she didn't have at the moment and thought to be helpful in her project. Honestly she already had a few other books about PCR, but every college student know that having only one resource is unacceptable, and more often than not, more is better, Of course, Seri being Seri, she felt that it was important to check what was written inside before she decided to actually buy the book.
It seemed that Seri was quite enjoying the book as she kept reading it until the last page. It was a good thing that the bookstore was not that crowded, so the green-eyed dhampir would not get in trouble if she accidentally forgot to pay any attention to her surroundings because she was too deep in reading. Though, if such a thing happened, she would be more than likely to be disappointed in herself.
A sigh, and Seri closed the book before putting it into the bag. As she turned to check another book, she saw a glimpse of somebody—someone a little bit taller than her, with dark hair—
—Is that... Him?
Yes, it must be him, the dhampir thought to herself as she watched the dark-haired man walking away. Another sigh came out from her mouth as she picked up a book from the shelf to read, feeling relieved that he didn't come her way. Be it deliberate or not, she would not be happy to bump against the male vampire again after what happened between them the other day as well as what happened to her at the college after that.
It was annoyingly embarrassing. I hate it so much.
@coilednoble 630 words notes: She's also trying to avoid him.. Let's see how long before they actually interact with each other...
TAG. @geniusloveless WORDS. 503 NOTES. Silently throwing some shade
A relieved sigh was given out from the dhampir just as soon as Ruki had turned away from her. He knew she saw him, why else would she sigh in relief? Like he was going to bother her in the first place. Did she honestly believe that he was going to speak with her first, after seeing each other, again? The female dhampir is nowhere near worth his time and conversation. She would have to do something that would “impress” him to even attempt on reaching up to his standards. But even then, he would still find her as a mere inferior.
Continuing on with the errand that needed to be taken care of, Ruki walked away to his path towards the main desk, leaving the blonde alone at the bookshelf, once more. It was nothing but silence at the bookstore, except the sounds of the vampire’s footsteps. Along with a couple of other readers inside, making sniffling noises as if they had allergies and sometimes even clearing their throats as they read whatever novels they have in their hands.
With the book still in his hand by a firm grip, Ruki approached the main desk of the bookstore. Displayed on the top of the desk was a little bell to ring for customer service, a couple of pens, brochures and magazines that were mainly about furniture and anything that didn’t involve the social media. Behind the desk was the employee in charge of checking in or out books. She looked a little tired or possibly bored at the moment as she sat down on her chair, in front of the computer, and playing some solitaire, more than likely to kill some time since there was hardly any activity going on. Ruki cleared his throat to get the woman’s attention and within seconds, the woman’s face turned towards him and she immediately minimized her game, getting up from her chair and walked up to him, asking if there was anything he needed. Without any words, Ruki handed her the book he had, giving her the gesture that he was checking it back in. The woman understood exactly what he had meant and took the book from him, telling him that she’ll take care of it from here and asked if there anything else he needed from her,
“That will be all.” Ruki responded. He wasn’t going to check out another book for now, especially since he had already planned out his day and wanted to be on track with time. There’s always another time to get another book.
With that errand done and over with, Ruki began to take his leave. He passed by shelf after shelf, again but stopped before he could walk by the shelf where the dhampir still remained. Is she seriously a college student, by all means? Clearly, she seemed more like a high schooler rather than a student in college and with that, all Ruki could mouth out under his breath was…
The dhampir knew she had little to no reason to believe the vampire was going to bother her, but when she saw him, he looked as if he stopped there for a second before he walked away. Admittedly, her memory of what happened some time ago between them suddenly resurfaced upon seeing him, and because of that, she felt a little bit worried. Seri's overcautious nature only provoked her fear a little bit more—wait a minute, did she said that she was kind of afraid? Because, honestly, it was uncomfortably true. The blonde didn't even know why—all that she knew was that feeling was kind of ridiculous, like—why be afraid of someone unimportant to her like the dark-haired vampire?
Ridiculous. What happened a while ago should be forgotten already... Alas, I can't forget it.
Another thing she did not really want to admit was that she was a little bit curious. Since the dhampir was too busy with the book she was reading earlier, she did not really noticed when the vampire reached the textbooks section of the store, nor for how long he was there before eventually walked away. She was wondering about the latter mostly, as well as why he stopped for a while near the textbooks shelf—if he really did that. No, she was not going to wonder why he was here, since every creature on Earth should know what would be the possibilities of what one would do at a bookstore.
The blonde woman sighed, trying to get rid any thoughts related to the male vampire as she flipped a page of a book titled The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for Human Viral Diagnosis, reading the content a little bit more before deciding that it was pretty much essential for her studies. She then went to check other books after putting that one into the bag—this time as she reached a book about analytical biochemistry, her eyes stumbled upon a familiar looking book. Out of curiosity, Seri grabbed the book and looked at its cover: The Cosmic Serpent: DNA and the Origins of Knowledge by Jeremy Narby. Upon seeing the title, she was pretty sure it was the English version of a book she saw in Miyazawa-senpai's office some time ago—his was the original French-language one which she barely understand. She knew the outline of its contents, however, since the doctoral student told her a bit about it, as well as the book that followed. Despite being written by a human anthropologist, the books caught her attention as it was—according to what she heard—pretty much telling someone how a researcher would work. Of course, that was not the only reason why Seri wanted the books—the subject of Narby's research was also an important factor.
As she read Narby's book, Seri could hear footsteps nearby, and all of a sudden, she caught a glimpse of someone—again?!
The female dhampir bit her lip as the male vampire stopped by the shelf where she was. Why on earth I have to see him again? Despite her fear and reluctance to see the man, Seri turned her head for a moment, only to noticed him saying something. For some reason the woman felt both irritated and threatened, but instead of saying something, she just kept silent as she turned back to the book in her hand, letting the man to walk away. But her silence was not for long as the blonde could not help but finally said, "What a nightmare."
As he expected; a reaction from his comment. Albeit, it didn’t satisfy him or anything, he just had the expectancy, especially from someone like that dhampir girl. With all honesty, Ruki could’ve just easily continued walking and head home, back to the Mukami household. However, playing with the blonde’s mind sounded like a rather entertaining idea, at the moment.
Thinking back to what he has already planned for today, the idea of toying with the dhampir might not be best done today in fact knowing her, it would be time consuming. Even her reactions aren’t enough to convince him to stick around and have some “idle chit-chat” with the woman.
“Save your breath, I’m not going to stay here and have worthless conversations with you.” He spoke. His voice, still calm but he didn’t hesitate to show the cold and bitterness in his words. Not looking back, the eldest Mukami continued to walk ahead, taking his leave for the entrance of the bookstore. But not without adding,
“I have errands today that are by far more important, than someone of low standards as you.”
Ever know what was worse than a nightmare of seeing a headache like the male vampire even if it was only a glance? It was none other than him speaking—responding to what Seri had said. For a second the blonde dhampir cursed herself silently—Why couldn't I just keep silent and ignore him, for whatever's sake?—before letting out a sigh. If the dark-haired man did not intend to stay and bother her with endless arguments, that would be very nice of him, actually. At least Seri could continue what she was doing in peace—she still needed to find a few more books before she could find Kanaya, paid for the price, and get out of the store.
The man, however, did not just leave after informing her that she should save her breath because he was not going to stay for some 'worthless' conversation with her. Instead, he spoke again, this time saying something that the dhampir did not really want to know and insulted her somehow. Someone of low standards as me? Who does he think he is? Someone very high and important? Like, the Emperor of Japan? Or, a higher being? Perhaps a god or something? The Demon King, maybe?
Without even looking at the male, the blonde closed the book in her hand and said coldly, "If you really have important things to do and wish to leave, then shut up and go ahead, I won't stop you."
Seriously, if that vampire really has important things to do, then he should give himself a favor: shut the fuck up, ignore Seri, leave her and the bookstore as soon as possible to do whatever he needs to. Or, perhaps he was just trying to provoke a reaction from Seri because she was very easy to be irritated even by the smallest thing? I bet it's the latter—what a troublesome headache.
Another sigh as the dhampir put the books in her hand into the bag and muttered to herself, "Honestly... I don't want to get another headache." Or even worse, a nightmare, Seri thought as she glanced at the various textbooks on the shelf to find another two books that she really needed to check out. But—wait a minute, his presence is already a nightmare.
TAG. @geniusloveless WORDS. 189 NOTES. Still short, but still shady.
The mouth she had, talk about ill-mannered. Even though Ruki’s walking, he could still hear her. He shook his head, she still has the nerve to talk back and attempt to outdo him. No doubt about it, but still, there’s always an error the eldest Mukami can point out from her.
“With a vocabulary that lacks professionality, such as yours, I cannot take you as a sincere person of society.” He replied to her again. “If there’s a book in this store that I can recommend for you, it would be the thesaurus. Perhaps then, you’ll have a better vocabulary and more choices of words to use, if you want to be taken serious by someone like me.”
He turned his head back, stopping at his tracks. “Until that time comes, which I highly doubt it will be very soon, I see no point of having to respect you.”
Walking again, Ruki continued for the entrance. He knew that time was wasting and he needs to leave now, or else he will spend his day here, having a pointless conversation with that dhampir, like last time at the market.
To be honest, Seri knew she made a big mistake by talking to the male vampire, even if it was to tell him to leave just as he wanted to. Perhaps it was her, rather than him, who really needs to ignore the other, but really, the dhampir had been trying to keep silent and ignore him—to no avail. Sometimes she hated this side of her who was easily irritated at the slightest provocation and could not refrain from responding to an insult like the ones the vampire throwed at her. Though, of course Seri believed it was his fault for insulting her.
That day he called me 'lewd woman' and 'mediocre', a moment ago he called me 'someone of low standards'... And—what now? I lack professionality? Who in the world he thinks he is? My professor?
The dhampir tried not to respond to him verbally despite raging inside. Instead, she picked a book about scientific writing from the shelf and started reading it. Even when the vampire suggested the thesaurus for her, the blonde just sighed and keep reading. Of course, her efforts did not last that long. As soon as he talked about respect, Seri closed the book in her hand with a particularly loud snap.
"Who in the world needs your respect? Unfortunately, I don't," she spoke as she turned to face the man, clearly irritated at both his words and behaviour. He was so arrogant beyond measure, it was outrageous. Seriously, Seri totally failed to understand why she needed to speak to him in a certain way to get his respect. It was not that she wanted to be seen as someone so low, but to tell the truth, she was not that hungry for his respect, let alone his attention.
"Thank you for the suggestion, anyway. That's very nice of you," she added a moment later, referencing to his recommendation about the thesaurus. Her voice slightly calmed by that moment, albeit still cold and bitter. "However, I already have one at home, and I think I'd rather save it for important assignments than for someone as pedantic as you."
With that, Seri sighed, turned away and walked towards the other end of the shelf. Right now she needed to find one more book, but so far she had not seen it—not at this end, so perhaps it was at the other end. As she walked, however, the vampire's words still lingered in her mind, making her grumbled inwardly.
I have to find better vocabulary to talk to someone like him? Don't be—
"Ridiculous."
@coilednoble 431 words notes: To be honest, I'm struggling with the writer's block here.
“If there’s one thing you should respect, it’s the environment you’re in, you fool.” Ruki replied, “You’re in a bookstore, the least you could do is talk in a low voice while you’re trying to make a pathetic excuse of defense.”
He isn’t going to have any of it. Why bother, anyway? There’s no way to get through a skull as thick as hers. Besides, why should he care? He doesn’t know a thing about her, aside from being disrespectful, stubborn and headstrong. It’s not like he’s going to like her or find her anywhere intriguing. All she is to him currently is a nuisance.
“If you have one already, I suggest using it any time, soon. It sounds like you’re in need of it and while you’re at it, try a dictionary.” He added more and more, a not so subtle act of provoking, “Try looking up the word ‘discourteous’ because that’s exactly how I would describe you.” He was already at the door and opening it halfway,
“Now then, I’ll be taking my leave. Good day to you.” He bid the dhampir farewell.
The vampire told Seri that she should respect the environment she is in, instead. While she admitted that he was right somehow, the dhampir still believed that she did nothing wrong, and that he deserved no respect at all. After all, it was his fault that she could not keep her voice low while talking to him. Seriously, how am I supposed to talk in a low voice if he keeps walking away like that? The dhampir knew the man was not human, she sensed it a while ago during their first meeting, but her rage prevented her from thinking clearly. She said nothing about it, however. She even did not said anything more in her defense regarding the matter of dignity.
As Seri 'thanked' the male for his unnecessary suggestion, he replied with another provocative suggestion: the dictionary. To look for the word 'discourteous'. Discourteous, huh? Seri asked herself inwardly as she walked towards the other end of the shelf where she was. As if I don't understand what he really means. As if he's a gentleman. Even if he seemed to have good manners in front of others' eyes, in Seri's eyes, the male vampire was nothing but an obnoxious person. So obnoxious it's unacceptable.
The blonde woman let out a deep sigh, before finally responded to the vampire's words, this time in a soft, yet still cold and bitter voice. "Once again, thank you for your suggestion." She was not looking at him. Instead, she was staring at some books at the shelf right in front of her. "Unfortunately, I don't need the dictionary to understand what are you trying to say about me."
As the vampire bid her goodbye, Seri said nothing but, "Great. Good day to you, too." The dhampir was still not looking at the man who was already at the door by that time. Not until a few moments later, when the final book she needed was in her hand. For a second, she watched him, before letting out another sigh and muttered to herself, "There's no way I'm gonna be polite to him." Reason number one: he's a very unimportant person. Two: he's annoying. Three: it's all his fault. No need for me to explain what, it's definitely all his fault, full stop.
If there was one thing that Seri appreciated from the male vampire, it was his decision to leave and not continue the worthless quarrel—if it could be called as such. I must admit, I was a little bit surprised. Still, he's annoying as hell. A head—
"Uhm... Rissan?"
Before Seri could even continue her inner monologue, a familiar voice called out to her, causing her to turn herself towards the source—a brown-haired girl with two short pigtails. Kanaya, who was supposed to be at the novel shelves, was already there beside the blonde dhampir with a troubled look on her face.
"Yes? What is it?" asked the dhampir, to which Kanaya replied nervously, "I... I think I forgot my purse. Could I borrow you money, please?"
Seri was about to say something when her human friend said sorry and told her that she would return her favor, prompting her to let out yet another sigh instead as she muttered, "Geez. What a headache..."
