[attr="class","textieno"]A dead silent night that was filled with unfortunate events, and a question filled Ruki’s mind, asking what sort of heinous crime did he commit to deserve such mindless acts from his younger brothers; Kou especially. Kou, with his little devilish schemes and his...no, the eldest didn’t even want to go near that thought, that image. It has singed on his mind and became too troubling to forget about. But he wants to forget, he wants to forget this night has ever happened. In immediate thought, he figured how exactly he can make himself forget what’s happened. Make time go by quicker and wake up on a new day.[break][break]
He reached the destination of the district where many obscene events occur. It’s not that he’s looking to pay for some random harlot to do vulgar acts upon him, he arrived here because it was the nearest area that has a bar. Biologically wise, Ruki knew he isn’t allowed to attend bars because he’s “not of age” but his chronological age made a huge difference. Let alone, his appearance and personality could make many assume he could be over twenty years; less troublesome for him.[break][break]
Passing by brothels and lounges, and ignoring any prostitutes out on the streets that were willing to sell their bodies for money, Ruki made his way to the nearest bar in the red light district. With ease, he walks in the building and no one questioning him about his age or anything that they’d be suspicious about. The main thing on his mind is having a drink, bourbon specifically. Making his way to the iconic seating row of the bar, the eldest Mukami sat down with his head in hands. The urge to having a drink right now grew, and aside from that, many other occurrences that had happened before ran through Ruki’s mind. How are there so many simpleminded humans in this world, and why must his brothers misbehave so often?[break][break]
Where is the bartender? He thought. That drink could be of great use right now.
A little bit of matte lipstick, a succulent burgundy that contrasted against her face even in the dim lighting of the bar. Jen had just gotten the job a few weeks ago, but honestly she rather missed working the bar, for all its questionable characters and shady dealings that sometimes came with it. She might even argue that there was a part of her that genuinely enjoyed this aspect of the job.
Yeah, yeah, according to Japanese law, she was "eighteen", but her American ID and liquor license said she was twenty-two, and that was good enough for the owner. One perfect Long Island Iced Tea and three shot recipes she knew had been hits with customers at other places she'd been employed, and they hired her. She was only part time, since school and capoeira kept her busy (not to mention, she still had some social engagements), and normally they scheduled her for afternoons, but she loved working Sunday nights like this since she often got more customers... and by extension, more money.
When she came in for the night, switching out with the other girl who worked Sunday afternoons, Jen saw that two of the customers - both regulars - had already been helped. However, she noted an unfamiliar face, a young man with coiffed, crow feather black hair, who was without a drink. Guess it was up to her to handle him~
What with the nature of the red light district, Jen quickly learned that - even more so than in other places - she got significantly better tips if she wore, rather more revealing clothing (without going overboard). Being a natural F cup, any remotely low cut top automatically looked far more salacious on her than on a smaller-chested woman... but hey, as long as they kept their hands to themselves, she was fine.
The dhampir let her fingertips trail lightly along the bar as she approached, and she gave a faint smile, "Never seen you 'round here. Let's get to business, sugar - what's your preferred poison?"
[attr="class","textieno"]His thoughts were soon interrupted; finally, a bartender. About time.[break][break] "Never seen you 'round here. Let's get to business, sugar - what's your preferred poison?"[break][break]
It’s rather obvious Ruki’s never been around here; because he doesn’t drink. Not that often, at least to say. He needed to stay calm, not blow up and give himself a bad impression to the bartender. Keeping in mind that everything now is fine, he’s away from home (from Kou mostly), and put all the other obnoxious moments he’s been having through these past times. But even then, that itself is becoming a build-up. The boiling point just rising further, and further up.[break][break]
Placing his hands on the table, Ruki slowly looks up to the woman who’s more than likely going to be taking care of his drinks for tonight. Aside from having a rather, large bosom that seems almost inevitable to gaze on by many gawkers; the brunette herself gave off a rather salacious vibe. He isn’t sure why, but she just happens to give off that vibe. Honestly to probably have a sizable chest, she would work here and specifically, at the red light district. She probably likes the attention the hungry men give her. How sickening.[break][break]
No, not today. Ruki’s already irritated enough as he is, but now he has to be a gentleman to someone who he could jump into the assumption of being promiscuous? Perhaps two shots of bourbon would be better tonight. Just get lost and hope for another day to arrive, quickly.[break][break]
“Bourbon will be all. No more, no less, I’m not exactly in mood to speak right now.” He dismissed her, giving off a discourteous tone towards the bartender.
Hmm... this one's probably just had a rough day. Jen had dealt with ruder customers before, but sometimes a little light conversation and a few stiff drinks got them to be friendlier (in some cases, a bit too friendly, though she wasn't sure if he'd go for that). Whatever, as long as her clients walked away satisfied - or ready to get a different sort of satisfaction from the more qualified professionals - she was happy.
"Decisive. I respect that," keep up the charm, stay cool, and work with him. The way he looked her over was, admittedly, unfamiliar in this setting. Where most men looked over her body as if they were getting more than just a stiff drink, this guy almost seemed... disapproving, maybe even disgusted? Maybe he wasn't interested in women? Best not to jump to any conclusions in any case.
"Bourbon it is. Guessing you want it straight, too?" Back home - especially when she lived in the South - bourbon was a pretty popular spirit; it wasn't uncommon to burn through several bottles in a single night, and even more so if a sporting event was on. Not so much over here, but they still kept some in stock just in case.
[attr="class","textieno"]Well, from most of the people he’s spoken with the past times, at least this one’s not so talkative or always questioning. Ruki surely has had enough of those kind of people. It’s not every day he gets to deal with someone who’s not a talker, aside from his youngest brother, Azusa of course.[break][break]
“I’m not someone who tends to waste their time, thinking about what they could be in favor for. I like to think ahead of my time, that way I am prepared unlike most people are.”[break][break]
That’s new, someone actually respecting him for once, instead of having to be offended and try to prove themselves their worth, for little to no reason. However, that doesn’t mean that Ruki automatically would respect the woman, immediately. She seems to get it quick and simple, like most people should do. It saves his precious time, at the very least. Then again, this could all be from her job.[break][break] “Guessing you want it straight, too?"[break][break]
Oh good, no questions that are about having to mix it with anything, and all those other time consumables. She understood exactly what he needs, still though, it doesn’t mean she earned his respect. Ruki wouldn’t just give it to her that easily. Albeit, it’s straight to the point and the eldest Mukami doesn’t need to repeat his whole sentence, like he usually had to with all the other foolish people.[break][break]
“Affirmative.” He answered, “I did say no more, no less.” [break][break]
After answering her, it didn’t come to his attention until now that Ruki for once in his eternal life, has forgotten his book. Of all times? It is more or less likely that he left it after his talk with Kou. No, he can’t let his blood boil any further.[break][break]
“Damn it.” He spoke under his breath, slight clenching his fist.
Jen felt her eyebrows raise for just a moment; mostly, for the fact that she was always rather impressed with those who could drink a hard liquor like bourbon without any sort of add-in or chaser. Of course, some did so with the intent to try and impress others, but again, this guy didn't seem to be interested in any of that. Whatever his deal was, he wasn't her usual customer.
She patted the bar surface, as if to signal that she'd understood, and flashed that half-smile again, "One neat bourbon, comin' right up."
The dhampir pulled out a freshly-cleaned highball glass (so fresh, in fact, that it was still warm from the steam), and fetched a bottle of Old Weller Antique. It was a good brand for a not-bank-breaking price, some even remarked that it was pleasantly sweet compared to other bourbons, so that tended to be the one she'd reach for when customers didn't specify a name. Not being one to consume them, she didn't know firsthand, but reportedly it was far better to consume this particular spirit at room temperature to get the best flavor out of it, so no ice was ideal.
She opened the bottle, and poured it out in front of him (not that he had anything to worry about, but it was a habit she'd taken on to reassure female customers). Jen tucked the bottle away again, and set the drink down on the bar, sliding it toward Ruki with a lithe motion of her hand.
"Here ya go, hon~ I'll be back in a moment."
A sweep down the bar to check on the two regulars, and one passed her the yen for the beers he'd been knocking back, while the other requested another martini. Jen mixed it up for him as per usual, but telling by the way his words slurred, she probably would have to cut him off and send him on his way.
Once she had tended to those two, she returned to the vampire, since he seemed to be lucid and it was quiet enough now that she could spare a few moments, "Doin' alright down here? By the way, sugar, just in case I end up seeing you again, what's your name?"
[attr="class","textieno"]So far the night is doing well, not enough to where Ruki’s forgetting the bad moments. For now, it’s still calm, and perhaps this could be the moment to at least redeem the rest of the night. Hopefully.[break][break]
The vampire watched as she poured him a glass, and then set the drink in front of him, telling him she’ll be back in a moment. Please, for the love of patience and silence, don’t come back for a conversation. Ruki didn’t need to talk, he just needs a drink or two, and he can be on his merry way. Taking the glass slowly in his hands, he eyed her as she left for only a moment and glances back at the bourbon. Ruki lifted up his glass and took a small sip of the bourbon. With just a small taste, he can definitely taste the alcohol and the sweetness balancing out. Maybe even some spice to it, as well? He didn’t hesitate to take another sip, this time a little more than the former. The bourbon’s more than likely aged, possibly for a couple of years, perhaps? He also caught more of the sweet taste, wheat sweetness along with some caramel and butterscotch.[break][break]
It definitely doesn’t taste too strong which is perfect for Ruki, the flavors are well-balanced out. It’s up to his standards, no doubt. Licking his lips, he had to take another sip and while drinking the bourbon, she ended up coming back, checking up on him. Great.[break][break] "By the way, sugar, just in case I end up seeing you again, what's your name?”[break][break]
Like that’s going to happen. Even if it were to happen, Ruki would probably choose another time, so he wouldn’t have to see her. He placed his glass down and gave out a sigh that sounded a bit irritated, [break][break]
“If this is a sort of way to be flirtatious with me, I can guarantee you, you’re more than likely not going to see my presence here.” He spoke, giving out a bitter tone in his voice and ignoring the former question.[break][break]
“With that, it’d be pointless and a waste to give you my name and besides, I said I didn’t want to talk right now. I am in no mood.” He didn’t even bother to look at her and just continued drinking his bourbon.
She stood up a bit straighter; again, Jen wasn't unused to being rebuffed by customers, but she wasn't expecting him to be that insistent on being left alone. Still, she maintained her composure, and responded with poise:
"I assure you, sweetheart - I'm not flirting with you for personal reasons, it's required for the job. Gotta make my money somehow, anyway~"
That was another thing she liked about bar tending - there was less need to be unnaturally friendly. Granted, she still needed to uphold a professional demeanor, and being naturally gregarious, interacting with people graciously was no real sweat; but, she could also afford to be a little more straightforward with her clients, so it was less exhausting at the end of the shift.
"Anyway, I ask because some people don't like the pet names, but if you won't tell me your actual name then I assume you're okay with them," the dhampir noted another customer coming in, a semi-regular who she'd seen a few times. She passed a friendly wave, to signal that she knew he was there, then remarked. "You can call me Jen, just say my name or flag me down when ya need another drink or something, okay hon?"
That ought to give him some space, she could tend to the most recent arrival and let Mr. Congeniality take a trip down Bourbon Street. With any luck he might be more open to conversation once the alcohol began to set in; after all, Jen lived by the philosophy that no one should have to drink alone, and job or not, she wasn't about to let him sulk by himself if she could help it.
[attr="class","textieno"]“Right, that’s one I’ve never heard of.” Then again, he is at the red light district and not at the other districts. Admittedly, she’s probably right, but he isn’t going to admit to that out loud. Honestly, Ruki just wanted to be left in peace with just his bourbon. Must he repeat himself that he’s not here for any conversation? Just drink and forget everything. Don’t tell me she’s going to be a talker. He thought, and for a moment he thought she wasn’t. It may be possible that this is not going to be the case. Fantastic.[break][break]
The vampire takes another sip, no, a gulp of bourbon this time and suddenly heard the bartender talking about having pet names. Pet names. Not in his entire lifetime would he prefer to be called by a “pet name”. He placed his drink down, again and began glaring at her with a venomous look.[break][break]
“Mukami Ruki.” He said, finally giving out his name, “I do not prefer having what you call, a pet name. The idea of having one makes me sick to my stomach.” He felt like his stomach is churning, considering it as an insult to his image, rather than something else.[break][break]
The bartender had given out her name; Jen. Like he’s ever gonna say her name, let alone see her. Thank goodness she left him be, again. Maybe she’ll get the hint to not talk to him while he’s having a moment. Before he could take another drink, he looked at his glass seeing that there’s only so much left. He could use another glass, to be honest. Meaning, he has to call her over. The night is beginning to turn neutral. Just when he’s probably going to have his peace, his drink is already less than half-empty.[break][break]
Taking the last sip of the bourbon, Ruki shook his head a bit. A slight fuzzy-like feeling in his head started to kick in. But he wanted more bourbon, and he has no choice but to call out for Jen to have another glass. Once again, great.[break][break]
It’s a wonder that his irritation hasn’t overwhelm him, completely to the point where he would more than likely become extremely cold and bitter. He sighed in annoyance, knowing there’s no choice but to…[break][break]
“Hey, bartender.” The vampire somewhat called out to Jen, not in a shout but enough to where he’s sure she could hear him.
“Mukami Ruki. I do not prefer having what you call, a pet name. The idea of having one makes me sick to my stomach.”
Halfway in transit toward the semi-regular, Jen paused upon hearing this, and turned back to face him. Then, her lips curled into a kittenish smirk, and her voice matched it by dropping to a proud purr, "Oh, it's not the pet names making you sick, honeybun. Or should I say, Mukami Ruki~ good to know we're on a first name basis now!"
With that, she left him to his own devices while she served up some imported beer to the semi-regular and his apparent friend (co-worker? Who knows), cleaned up the martini glass from the lush who left her three 1000 yen notes and didn't bother waiting on change, and rang up the charges. Maybe five minutes later, she heard him:
“Hey, bartender.”
Welp, so much for the names. Oh well, no skin off her back - if that was what he preferred to call her, so be it. Jen let her hips slink with her high-heeled stride, and it only took a glance for her to see the empty highball. In one smooth motion, she scooped it up in her hand, "Ready for round two, hot stuff?"
She then chuckled, "Oh, sorry, I mean, Ruki-san. That better?"
Okay, that was a lie - she wasn't that sorry. Or... nope, she wasn't sorry at all (and she wasn't exactly bluffing - he wasn't hard on the eyes by any stretch). Point being, she did ask him to call her by name; the least he could do is return the favor.
[attr="class","textieno"]The way she purred his name out. Just...why? Is she trying to be coquettish towards him? Who does this woman think she is, and what on earth is she trying to attempt here? Ruki’s eyes followed Jen walking away, a puzzled looked formed on his face.[break][break]
“We’re not even near that.” he muttered, turning his eyes towards his glass.[break][break]
Minutes later, after calling out for her. She made her way to return, much to his reluctance. The way she motioned herself to reach for the empty glass and then…[break][break]
"Ready for round two, hot stuff?"[break][break]
Ruki stared at her longer until he turned his face away, blinking with utter bewilderment. If there was still some bourbon left, he would have immediately taken another sip, pretending he didn’t just hear that from her mouth. He can still hear her as she “apologized” and called him by his name. It was rather more playful than sincere. Still perplexed, Ruki decided to try ignoring that ever happened.[break][break]
“It’d be much appreciated right now if you just pour me another glass.”[break][break]
This Jen woman, there’s something fishy about her and it began to annoy Ruki. He doesn’t know what her motives are and why she’s behaving in this sort of manner. There is the excuse that she has to do this for her job, he’s beginning to come to the doubt that this is at all the case; it sounds more intentional.[break][break]
At this rate, the patience for that second glass is thinning.
“It’d be much appreciated right now if you just pour me another glass.”
To that, Jen hummed thoughtfully, "Alright you're the boss, toots~ at least 'til my shift is up!"
With that, she let out a giggle, and set the used highball in the dishwater tray, then reached for a clean one before she erected herself again. The bottle in hand as she screwed the top off again, the dhampir kept up the playful tone, "You certainly drank that down awful fast, sugar~"
She poured out the amber alcohol, "Must've been a hell of a day if you finished it off that quickly. Most folk take at least ten, twenty minutes to get through that... or did you just like it that much?"
Jen slid the drink within reach, though the way she did so felt as if she was making a chess move, despite her fixing her gaze on him rather than the glassware, "If so, I'll keep it in mind for if I see you again. Makes me happy when I see that my patrons enjoyed my recommendations."
"Oh, and..." she set the bottle back in its place, then rested her weight on one arm, braced on the bar, while the other balanced on her hip, "How did you wanna handle payment? You wanna put it on a tab or are you gonna pay up once you've had enough?"
[attr="class","textieno"]How many names can she come up with? It’s like she has an imaginary list of names in her head, that she’ll bring out another name for him. Will her shift end soon? Now would be the best time, and there’d be another bartender taking over.[break][break]
She pointed out his rather fast pace of drinking. Had she known what he’s dealt with, she wouldn’t probably blame him. On the other hand, Ruki doubts that she’ll understand.[break][break]
"Must've been a hell of a day if you finished it off that quickly.”[break][break]
More like a ridiculous night. Ruki thought. She slid the glass to him and before picking it up to drink more, he felt a little lightheaded; attempting to focus on his cup. There’s no way that he’s getting tipsy right now, he didn’t drink that much bourbon, did he?[break][break]
“I’m not like most people, to be frank with you. I do things at my own pace.” He answered her. Slowly lifting up his glass, he put it to his lips and took a few more sips. Still the same flavor, or maybe sweeter; he isn’t so sure.[break][break]
He looked at Jen once more, her patrons? He jumped to assumption of knowing why she probably has patrons in the first place. Her behavior is more than likely what attracts the fish in the sea, here. Disgusting.[break][break]
“Recommendations? I do not recall you ever making any recommendations to me ever since my arrival.” He stared down at his glass, his speech didn’t sound like the usual way he talks, “I believe I told you what I wanted, nothing more. Or did you brought that up to make it look like I’d want to know what you find best?”[break][break]
Of course Ruki knew he has to pay up, but he continued to drink more before answering her question. He didn’t come to realize how strong the bourbon is until the lightheaded feeling worsened. He knew the consequences if he keeps drinking more bourbon, but is he at the right mindset to acknowledge it? Every sip and Ruki shook his head more frequent than usual.[break][break]
“Put this on a tab.” He slurred, trying to collect all the thoughts in head to process.
Ah, the first slips of a slur~ there was always something about them that felt reassuring. Though objectively she knew she shouldn't be enabling people's vices like this, Jen still enjoyed the sound of someone as they began to drift into the lull of intoxication.
"Oh, but I did give you a recommendation. I simply didn't make it explicit~" she glanced over at the small collection of bourbon displayed in the lineup, "You never asked for a specific brand, soooo I got you one that's generally popular with customers and isn't wildly expensive. No shame in admitting that you enjoyed it."
She'd been in the business long enough that even if he hadn't been starting to slur, Ruki was certainly beginning to sway a bit, as he seemed to get a bit unsteady. His speech was still decipherable, but she wasn't so sure it'd stay that way for long. He acted like he drank often, yet the level to which he was being affected by the bourbon suggested otherwise.
"Hm? A tab?" Jen grinned, perhaps a bit smugly, "Changed your mind about not coming to see me again? Alright, I can do that for ya, babydoll~"
With that, she rang up the two glasses of bourbon, and checked the bar again, "Alright, I'll be back again, I'm being summoned at the other end. You know how to get a hold of me, handsome - flag me down or call my name, like before."
[attr="class","textieno"]Ruki tried to look over the lineup of bourbon Jen’s talking about. His vision getting blurry, things were beginning to slightly duplicate.[break][break]
“Admit? With all honesty, this seems like a usual everyday bourbon.” Despite being buzzed, a part of Ruki still remains to have arrogance. His speech slurs became more obvious and he tried to keep himself in place from the sways. It didn’t seem at all that the bourbon would have affected him now, nor did it seem like he drank so much. It was only two glasses, did he absolutely forget how strong the alcoholic beverage is? Did he consume them too quick?[break][break]
His hands were in place, he kept his head down, closing his eyes and trying to maintain balance on his seat. It’ll all end soon, it’ll wear off.[break][break]
“Wh-what?” He slowly opened his eyes to glare at Jen, his vision may be impaired at the moment but he can still hear what she’s saying.[break][break]
“I did not...make that decision because I want t-to see your face…” He corrected her, the slurring kept worsening, “I chose that decision because...no, will you stop with the names? It’s aggravating.”[break][break]
When she walked away again, he gave out a face of disbelief.[break][break]
“H-hey, listen to me when I’m talking to you.” He snapped his fingers at her. The audacity she has for turning away from him like that. Ruki could barely manage to keep himself in balance.
